Anyone go to the Peel game? They lost by a goal to Perth.

Don't know who were the best but Duman was again pushing 30 disposals. Hughes was named at CHB but don't know if he played there, but if he did he got a fair bit of it.

I'd like to see him back in the side and Blakely to the midfield. He had good year in a bad season in 2017 and deserves to be in the side imo.

From Lyon's presser I reckon Dumin will come in next week, and you'd expect B Hill and Langdon as well. On that basis, I wouldn't be surprised if Brayshaw goes back to Peel for a week.

I agree that Cerra will be the best of these crop.. he is classy and is playing as a half forward which he has never done before so he is a bit lost.. he is a bit slight to play as the inside mid he was at under 18’s but he will be awesome, hopefully he settles in and enjoys perth.. our drafting has been pretty good lately I think but time will tell

I'm gonna bit biased, because I have admittedly been a Crowden fan since I saw his U17 footage after he was drafted. As such ,I've been watching his input pretty closely....probably more closely than the others.

Yep, he's still working things out about the speed of AFL, but he's allowed to, for someone with 3 games under his belt. Have been most impressed about some of the 1% stuff that he does...

I think he did some great things on the weekend and apart from having an accurate and raking left foot, some of his handballs under pressure have been really smart for a bloke in his 3rd game. For his size and age, his tackling has been ferocious..... And to do this AND have great skills has been something that we have missed from this type of player in the past.

Pretty certain The Owl will keep progressing and will soon be a crowd favorite for the work he puts in. Reckon he's got a bit of mongrel about him too, and as he gets a bit more confident with his place in the team, we'll see that come out.

Having said all that, thought Banfield was really good on the weekend...got a bit more freedom this week, but Cerra was affected by the conditions and perhaps was being marked a bit more given his form in previous weeks., Brayshaw is struggling. He probably needs a rest, and a bit of confidence act with Peel.

Having said all that, I'd be more concerned about the places of Tucker and Sheriden. For blokes who are fighting for their place in the team, neither of them 'knocked the door down'. Sheriden is flat footed around the packs and is still panicky his disposal. And Tucker just goes missing, and is indecisive when he does get a kick via mark or free kick.

Both did nothing to hold their spots, although Tucker at least had a preparation excuse. Both go out when Hill and Langdon return, but maybe Tucker gets another week to give Brayshaw a spell...

That's interesting Detox. For some reason I thought Cerra was a half forward and that's what we recruited him as.

So he's a midfielder that we're trying to make into a forward? How unusual of us to recruit someone and play them in position they're unaccustomed to. Sheridan, Sutcliffe, Cox, De Boer are some that spring to mind.

If we were intent on a half forward why the *^#% didn't we get Stephenson?

We’re playing him as a half forward because he is to skinny to run through the middle, I think the theory is something along the line of “get games into him however possible” but at Freo the half forward role is akin the the exit lounge so it seems an odd thing to do.

I dunno...but how many players any of us ever saw at say, u16 level, playing as a half forward or fwd pocket, went on to wafl, let alone afl. I reckon all on afl lists would have been dominant mids or key possie in their developing years. The point is that if suited, players entering afl need to be good enough to adapt to what is needed. It seems though, that we persist with players who are really not suited to their positions, ie half backs with no speed or ability to break the lines. Thankfully we now have Ryan, Wilson etc...but for so long we just kept rolling on with...we know the names, not their fault, and very frustrating for them as well.

Cerra said in his interview after the Essendon game that it was the first time he has ever played as a forward

Well, Cerra knows how to kick a goal - good on him.

I have a theory that Freo burns out their draftees then dumps them at Peel - like Bic lighters. They come into the bigs desperate to make a splash then run out of gas. Some guys just flick away in the magoos and then get the ol' heave ho. Cox and Nyhuis made a splash, ran out of gas and I can't see them coming in any time soon. There are others toiling away down there that probably won't get more than a game or two before they're dumped - some (like that big Strdn bloke) inexplicably may not even get a shot to get burnt out..

The Owl may be a good example of this soon - he's played his guts out, but in the end probably will just run out without improving too much. Perhaps It's just the way we play, the so called 'game plan'.

Cerra was overwhelmed in Canberra, Brayshaw needed to come out after the Suns game.

Watched the Peel game and they were very ordinary.
Kicked 6 goals till 3/4 time and 5 in the last when Perth young players ran out of legs!!
Duman OK and maybe worth a try in backline for Blakely to midfield.
North and Hughs did a few nice things, probably not enough

Bit tough to judge Tucker from a game like the last one.

It seems that most people think Cerra is going to be a great pick up. He certainly shows a bit of poise and class but as mentioned is being played out of position and needs to bulk up.

I think it was Morgan who described Brayshaw as going to be an accumulator. Much the same as Lachie Neale then? He's a similar build and user of the ball. Accumulators are rarely tagged. They may pick up quite a few disposals but they don't do the damage of a big bodied midfielder like Fyfe, Martin, Dangerfield. These guys have the strength to break tackles, are good overhead and hard to bring down.

I also think Brayshaw will play a good number of games for us(but not win the Rising Star sorry Jezza)but if you look at our drafting last year I was surprised we took him at number 2. I would have preferred Uniake-Davies an already strong big youngster like Ollie Wines when he first started. He hasn't really done anything much for NM yet either though.

Rayner was always going to go at No 1 and has been playing well for Brisbane. Stephenson had a standout game the other night and he would have been my other pick. He is lightning quick and has great poise and skills. Hopefully Cerra who has shown similar glimpses will also be one of those exciting type players that you love to watch.

Nobody was going to take Brayshaw that highly. He didn't figure in calculations until quite lower. He certainly does seem to be very level headed with a real work rate but he like most of the other early draft picks are still finding their feet.

I think the the three rising star nominations so far all played a few games last year so having that under your belt and a proper year of pre season will see these two really step up next year and of course hopefully show steady progress this year.

Banfield and Crowden spent time playing in the WAFL and SANFL as did Kelly and Ryan who have both made great starts. It makes a difference than coming straight out of U/18s.

I think I and some others here get excited when it comes to draft time and put unrealistic expectation on the young kids we pick up.

All four a doing fine. Crowden looked out of his depth in his first game but has improved since, I like his improvement this week after the alleged rocket from Ross. It shows character.

Brayshaw will be an accumulator but also has good disposal skills. I think it will end up a new Haselby. I’m not surprised he is getting tired he is more inside than Cerra and making a lot of body contact. He will be a very good player.

Cerra I rate highly he seems very versatile. Can play mid, half forward and likely half back. He is a bit light but has good skills and could develop into a good winger.

Ban field is a bit older and ready made, I love his attitude and being designated ragged so early in his career shows how highly the coaches rate him.

We have 4 good ones there and they gives us a bright future.

Very happy with all the newbies especially Banfield. Agreed Brayshaw may need a game at Peel, for a break from pressure more than anything.
Crowden reminds me so much of Luke Toia (for the youngsters amongst us, he played for us from 1996-2003). Hope he ends up with the same heart...
