And here was i thinking we did ok in the scheme of things..

Apart from a few late goals we were right in it against the AFL subsidised premiership favourites playing on a ground none of them have played on before with a mega cross aind making delivery ordinary.

It could be a lot worse.. last season a match like that could have turned into a 60-90 point loss.. it didnt. Some systems are in place and some are a work in progress.

We could have won that match by 5 goals and people would still find reasons to complain about the coaching staff..

Back in the land of purple after watching a premiership contender beat a developing team (us). We will be brilliant at times and maybe not so good at times. Next week is all I care about...in my travel weary delirium.

After thinking about what happened early in the second quarter to change our game around.

I) Cameron passed a ball into Griffen from about a meter out of bounds right in front of a boundary umpire, decision, play on, result goal.

ii) Greene (I think) pushes Neale in the middle of the back, into Wilson, who was just about to take possession of the ball and clear it to CHF. GWS gain possession and goal.

Does RoLy, reading the messages say "Not aeffinggain, send everyone back to limit the damage." ?

That is the only explanation to changing a working game plan to a proven dud game plan.

To those who say Clarkson is the only coach who can react and change his game plan in the second quarter, they are wrong. RoLy can do it too, he just does it arse about.

Jason the only bit you missed was that your description accurately summarises what every AFL team does when they’re getting beaten around the contest.

"That lack of midfield depth led to Mundy having to go on ball and rob us of our most creative forward this year (in terms of score involvements)"

I actually found this part of Jason's summary the most worrying. It's virtually saying that here's a bloke of 30 or 31 years of age who is actually been and still is one of our best ever midfielders and he is in the twilight of his career and has become our most creative forward, and he's not really a known forward.

To me it shows two things.
i. How poor our forward line recruiting has been
ii. How valuable Mundy must be

I only ever watch Freo games (too apathetic to care about other teams) and due to various quirks of fixturing and a period with a broken tv I've missed our GWS games over the last few years. So I watched this game with fresh eyes.
My take away? ... They are monsters. I couldn't believe how big they were. The whole squad! Last time I saw them they all looked like Cerra does now but I was shocked at their size and strength. And speed. They were obviously faster than us across the board. That was the first game I've seen anyone get separation from AP.
I reckon they're just better footballers. We got smashed at contested balls. In most cases that's got less to do with structure and more to do with one guy bearing another guy.

Is Roly the Messiah? No. But I'm not surprised that structures fall apart if you keep losing contests like that.

High draft picks don't turn out good automatically but they're generally picked high because they're faster, smarter, more skilled and at GWS now they're bigger.
I hope they never win the big one - it's an indictment on the AFL that they facilitated such a corrupted squad in an otherwise equalised competition.

So the consensus is that our forward line was non existent and that we’re playing players out of position. I agree with the fact that GWS are a team of Giants after seeing all of their top draft talent developed. If after Rd. 6 we’re behind the ledger, then I’ve totally been misguided.

There is no consensus. There are a bunch of different opinions varying from we're going to win the rest of our games because Ross Lyon is a genius through to we're going to lose all of our games because Ross Lyon is an idiot.

GWS are a better team than Fremantle and, after two hours of football, should have come away with the win but Fremantle are a developing side in the midst of a rebuild so you can look at where they are and what the do well and what they do poorly without it being because the opposition were better on the day.

Fremantle are inefficient at scoring goals. There are three ways to fix it - become more efficient at scoring, get a lot more of the ball or stop the opposition from ever scoring. I think we're putting a lot of effort into the second two options.

It is great to strangle the opposition but it is imperative that you reap the rewards and score with the same maniacal approach...like all recent premiership teams.

Jason Giants v Freo 6 years 1 week ago #195

I tried to limit the use of the sarcastica font in my last post, but sometimes I overstep the mark.

My comments were based on a very small sample size (re: Mundy). But the fact I feel many on here have such passionate hatred towards Lyon, our administrators, football dept, ass coaches, etc. that I wonder how they reconcile to really be Docker ‘supporters’. Fair dinkum, I think some on here subscribe to a line of thinking similar to one I recall from a US Vietnam War veteran - we had to destroy the village to save it.

But back to the footy... one reason why Mundy has done so well up forward this year - aside from the fact he is a champion footballer with great skills, strength & decision-making - is other teams have been unable to find the right match up on him. That is, he’s confused other coaches. That also doesn’t mean he’s our ‘best’ forward - otherwise he’d be getting the first or second best defender each week - which he doesn’t.

But as Barra is getting on a bit and lacking a yard of pace that, let’s face it, he didn’t really have to start with - the coaching staff (not Roly, clearly, he’s not capable of such insight - sarcastica font engaged) have found a new role for him. He also hasn’t been our highest goal scorer so far either.

At the moment, we have a forward line consisting of Tabs, Cammac, Ballas, Matera with SonSon, Cerra, Brayshaw, Banfield, et al rotating through. Cammac has a shocker backing up from his best game in purple the week before. Matera, Brayshaw, Cerra & Banfield have 4 or less games experience playing in our team.

Had Walters not dropped a lace out pass from Cammac, Neale chipped over to Ballas in the goalsquare and/or Walters kick over to Matera been a metre closer - then all of a sudden our ‘disfunctional’ forward line looked ok.

I am less concerned about our forward line as when we move the ball from defence quickly and directly - as we’ve seen the past few weeks - then the goals come.

Premierships are built around strong defence, pressure on the ball carrier and quick, direct ball movements. The past 3 GF’s have been won by the teams doing all of the above - despite their opponents having (arguably) better forward lines on paper. Certainly that can be said for both Sydney & Adelaide.

We have already shown this year that with some shrewd recruiting and the return from long-term injuries - we have a backline that can be top 4 again. The midfield is going ok and with some high draft picks getting ground time - I’m optimistic that can be top 4 material sooner rather than later.

Forward lines, in the modern game, seem to be the least necessary of the 3 when it comes to the ultimate glory. Sydney with Franklin & Tippett & Adelaide with Tex & Jenkins haven’t been able to come away with the chocolates - despite heavy favouritism - 2 GF’s in a row. You could thrown in Wet Toast’s forward line in 2015 to the conversation too, for that matter.

My point is, forward lines appear to be the issue when you don’t convert in 50’s - but if you can’t match it with the best midfields and defences then your chances of winning drop away to zero - just like the in 50’s do.

Much like our 2016 (when we still had Pav) and, to an extent, our 2017.

I was leaning towards idiot the other night Yoss...

but that was at the pub and I realised it was the bloke I'd walked in with and we were speaking the same language so now I'm leaning towards genius.
