TOPIC: Booing Lachie Weller

Must admit, I was a bit surprised when I heard a few boos for Lachie Weller, presumably because he chose big bucks + Gold Coast lifestyle over Freo. Hey booers, go easy on the kid: we got Andrew Brayshaw with the number 2 pick and this video still makes me laugh my head off:

I'm not usually someone who boos former players. Players have all sorts of reasons for wanting to leave, and we've been the beneficiary of some good WA lads wanting to come home. So long as the club gets decent compensation for them then I think everyone can move on.

But Weller didn't handle himself well during negotiations, and I reckon that rightly put a few people offside.

Out of curiosity, what pitch was the booing? Is it possible that it was made up largely of teenage girls?

I'm not sure if you were at the game Jooter, but the boos were followed by a round of laughter. It was good fun - lighten up, it even cracked a smile on that Snotty Turncoat's face.

Yes, Polly, I was at the game. Thought the boos were bit loud at first, then sort of subsided as the game went on. Didn't hear the laughter, but the idea of getting the number 2 pick did make me smile every time Lachie came near the ball. Good fun..

He did have a better game than AB - maybe we got him going.

The booing seemed from the TV coverage to be a case of "we are expected to boo him, so we may as well give Baz and co something to talk about" type of attitude. Except for booing Margetts and the eagles, you can't really take Freo booing seriously, the crowd doesn't seem to put their heart and soul into it.

Its a professional sport he owed us nothing and we got pick 2. . Booing makes us look like those morons up the road or Colonwood.

I'm not going in for booing this season, at least not for rubbish reasons. Exceptions will be made for the slime and bad umpiring. But if you use your knee like Sam Mitchell, or you iron out one of our players, I'll boo you.

I only noticed booing once, but it was preceded by a loud wolf whistle so maybe the previous comment about the source was close to the mark.

Only once, early in the game and definitely lighthearted. I had a chuckle when I heard it and so did a few people around me.

I'm just sorry we didn't get the opportunity to give Mickey B a cheer.

Pretty hard to boo him when he hardly touched the ball.

Then again, neither did Brayshaw.

Homesick to the GC where he lived for 2 years. Spent more time in Perth. Deserves the boos, wasn’t worth the 4 years offered by either clubs. Good bloke and hope he goes well, but definitely overpaid.

This was a perfect example of where booing is appropriate and required.
Booing a player that gets traded out (but wanted to stay) is not on.
But Weller, not only wanted out when he had a great offer on the table, but he took offence to the Dockers driving a hard bargain on the trade.
