Ballas almost always the smallest player on the ground. Not exactly a powerhouse build below the hips so naturally will go to ground easier. But the courage and commitment of the man is far above most others. Selwood most courageous? Bollocks. Give me Hadyn any time. He got 2 goals and provided contests all day. He is freo!

Ballas typifies what Freo is. His courage is unquestionable, he never shirks a challenge and never gives in. The reason why he takes the mark on kickouts is because no-one ever gets a soft 10 metres while he is on the mark. And something very noticeable after his second goal was the way his teammates got to him to give him a pat on the back. He is genuinely popular in the team despite what some media types wish us to believe.

Ballas has had a good start to the season. Every game there are 2 or 3 incidents where he proves to be a cut above your average AFL player. That courageous mark last week. The pass to Cerra last week. The goal saving spoil today. It is these things that you don't see your Tommy Sheridans or Danyle Pearces do. If you gave him Fyfe's body, he would be the best player in the competition. As it is, he's worth his spot every week.
