Ross definitely has the back six to attack and rebound off half back like he has ever had before.. I think he probably sees that as a strength and will try and be more of a rebounding team than just a get terrority and reset team now.. it will be interesting to see the stats on goals from defensive 50 as the season rolls on

When Jezza starts studying Lyon's pressers and using his cliché de jour, I got to wonder who is staying on message here?

He's got plenty making excuses for him, though.

Apparently, he was a genius who took a bunch of ordinary guys to the top. Then he was a genius coach who diidn't have the cattle to do the job, even though they were the same cattle.

Now we are turning the playing group over, he's a genius coach who can't get results because he's stuck in a rebuild, something that other coaches can seem to do without.

God only knows what the non-excuse will be. Maybe we can go back to blaming Bond, Chris Bond

"Lyon is on most clubs radar."

Would you please stop saying that unless you can back it up with some facts!

So Yeti, since Roly is paid a lot he's good? But I'm a bit worried that Morgan has been snooping around where I work - there are a few top bods there who definitely confirm his suspicions.

You are clearly going with the other extreme Morgan but my point that we played very different football last season with the youngsters coming in is a valid and very real point. They didn't play to the normal RL guidelines of looking backwards/sideways for options and instead looked to attack, prompting others and creating the play for us. Chief amongst those were blokes like Ryan and early on B Hill.

It was also very clear as the year wore on that they stopped doing that as their first option and instead reverted to looking backwards/sideways as a first option, our play becoming stunted and slow. It was just as clearly something coached into the side and had players second guessing themselves as they fought their natural instincts to use the footy as they wished and instead play the coaches game.

The good thing about youth in this case is that they come in raw and with the natural instincts that had them drafted. It takes time to mold them into stars and we've got a few with potential on our hands. I want to see them embrace that and continue to attack, not have it restricted as they are forced to play roles in a dour machine that excites no one and results in the poor play we've experienced the past few years.
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

the best of last years recruits are playing well and our new recruits are very good. And so far we are injury free. So really there is no comparison between 2017 and 2018. Just take the combination Ryan Wilson Blakely and Pearce and Hamling and what they give the team... Collectively thats a more solid bunch than we have had for years.

To say that CEO's and coaches earn the big money they are on because they provide wealth to the people that employ them is a stretch. Take away the workers/players and see what they are worth.

Players don't kick sideways when there's a good option forward. They kick sideways when there is no good forward option. This is part of every team's game plan, and for good reasons. Players are trained to assess these options. One of the main objectives of pressure on the ball carrier is to get him just kick forward so the ball goes to a contest.

The question is not why did they kick back or sideways. That's what good teams do, when appropriate. The real question is this: why there wasn't a good forward option? Answering this question means moving beyond being a two-bob expert and really looking at why the space forward is covered and what can be done. You're just kidding yourself if you think there's a single one line answer. FFS if there was everyone would do it. All the one-liners have been tried a long time ago. The real action is somewhere else.

You might have noticed Adelaide did a lot more backwards and sideways ball movement than Richmond's push forward strategy. According to the Dockerland brains trust, Adelaide lost.

Generally when you kick backwards or sideways it's to draw players away from where you would like to kick, or move the ball around their zone to find an opening. When you've flooded your own forward line because you believe it's important to hold the ball in to the 50m areas for long periods, it seems a pointless. You're essentially trying to out manoeuvre your team mates (and your coach).

So the problem (Mk 2) seems to be flooding your own forward line. A breakthrough insight. In the DL memescape at the very least.

Look you blokes, if you want to sum up RolY's coaching style, you need to look no further than what he did at the start of the game on the weekend when they all went to have their photo taken in the centre at the Colinseeum. His true coaching style came out as he got himself seated up for the moment and was summed up perfectly. I'm sure Shane has a copy of the footage somewhere.

That being said, I have to take my hat off and say there was some distinct changes to the way we entered the 50 this week, and we really did look to pick out a target better, and we didn't just receive an outgoing ball and bomb it back in straight back from where it had come from. We did move it about, and enter from a different angle. Made me think RolY was reading Dockerland and had a look at how hockey is played. The mid field really picked up the slack and ran this week and applied way more pressure. As much as I hate to admit it, some one did some coaching and drilling this week, and I guess that RolY has to get the credit for it. So well done to who ever got that done.

The only thing I wished we added to this work above, was a plan where we have at least two people staying behind in our forward line and leading out from somewhere near the square into different areas so they can take a grab with their out stretched arms in front of them, instead of this overrated kick it over the heads of a forward running backwards while fighting off a defender style of play. There is a line from the Castle about the Trading post Ad that is probably due about now....
