On the AFL website today a report that Geelong will charter a flight from Avalon direct to Perth for their clash with the E-Girls on Sunday, arriving at about the time the Dockers are playing GCS and then flying back after the game to get their entourage home by 1.00 am Monday, rather than 5.00 am into Tullamarine on the red-eye.
The bit that caught my eye says:
The journey West is the Cats' first of two interstate trips inside three weeks. They face Port Adelaide on Saturday in round five, coming off a six-day break following a Sunday match against St Kilda at GMHBA Stadium.
It must be tough to have to front up to interstate travel twice in three weeks — who would have thought?
Still, the idea has merit — they are using "Virgin Australia's private service" - filling up surplus seats with in-house sales to sponsors and members. I reckon Virgin could fit out a plane with on-board treatment facilities to transport most if not all AFL teams to their designated ports each round, with surplus seats on sale to any takers. That would certainly help with the travel burden of WA clubs.
