TOPIC: Port vs Swans

Seeing tonight’s result with Port beating the Swans away from home makes me feel a little bit better about last week’s result. Looks like we came up against a team that is on song for the start of this season.

I watched half of the last quarter and the game was virtually handed to Port by the umpires .
There was some shockers all in favour of Port . ( IMO )

After we beat the bombers I was pretty sure Port would beat Sydney. They are good

Interesting that Port went with the small forwards to run over the Swans in the second half, shows a willingness to use tactics and strategy that vary with the opposition strengths and weaknesses.

Really good point.
Ross was asked that same question when the dockers were relevant a few years ago.
He said he liked his players to be predictable. I think he was trying to say he liked his players all on the same page and knew what they had to do.
I suppose he does not like changing the side up too much because it might cause players to be confused with the game plan.

Please explain. What is the “game plan”

The "game plan" is the coach's (collectively, along with their media mates) method of making sure that no-one from club president down to the auskick kids think he is irrelevant. If it was thought that the players could think for themselves, and win games with their own brains, the coach would be no more than the bloke who puts out the witches hats at training, tells the players what training exercise to do next, and who puts the names on the whiteboard in their positions to start the game.

The WC didn’t need a game plan yesterday many of the Dogs players were witches hats. WC retain the flat track bullies trophy.
That English bloke needed a game plan...he looked lost.
Good work to beat Sydney and without Ryder.

So the “game plan” involves knowing some training drills, selecting the right players and putting the in the right positions. Then you tell the players to contest for the loose ball, maintain possession when you have the ball and try to kick a higher score than the opposition. You can’t do much more than that because it’s an oval ball that behaves like it has a mind of its own.

The Game Plan is football’s equivalent to the Emperor’s New Clothes.

WTB,

if, as you say, game plans are the football equivalent of Emperor's New Clothes, then perhaps you can explain why we fell away so badly, why we haven't improved in the years since oh and why we are paying somebody 1.2 million a year to basically do press conferences.

Of course, Clarkson had nothing to do with all those Hawthorn premierships because game plans are meaningless, right?

Jezza is going to have conniption fits when he learns that Roly doesn't actually do anything.

I have to wonder if people actually watch football these days

Walter, whilst the ball doesn't bounce where you can predict it doesn't mean you can't control: whether you play man on man or guard space, kick long to contests or pass laterally to maintain possession, push your forwards up the ground or leave them at home, try and outnumber your opponents in their forward line, move the ball out of the backline by fast running handball or fast kicking...

You might argue all clubs do all of the above but for how long and under what circumstance is your game plan.

Yeti, Clarkson worked out the Hawks players strengths, and told them to get out there and play footy using those strengths. He probably even told them that they were good at kicking the ball to each other, that their backmen were good at stopping other players from getting the ball and that their forwards were good at kicking goals. The players thought to themselves "Gee I reckon we can beat everyone else coz Clarko reckons we are pretty damn good." Then Clarko sat back and counted his money.

I agree Yeti, it isn’t as simple as my sarcastic post implied. What I was trying to indicate is that I believe that the so called Game Plan is an over used cliche that doesn’t really tell us anything. Every team apparently has a game plan that is bullet proof if only their players could stick to it.
I appreciate that Coaches can influence outcomes by moving players etc but their capacity to set up preplan coordinated actions and set pieces of play is limited (not impossible but limited). The Game Plan has become a meaningless term that is thrown around by players, coaches and commentators as a replacement for actual details. What was Clarkson’s brilliant Game Plan? Sure, his team can recruit well; he can motivate and match up his players against the opposition, and his training and conditioning staff are first rate, but what was the Game Plan? Is it all of the above, in which case fine but call it something more appropriate.
It’s a genuine question - what is a Game Plan? To me it sounds like nothing more than some planning around your (and your oppositions) strengths and weaknesses. A bit like year 12 footy.
