JPs Bar at Gloucester Park

I was looking to end the review series with a bang, but my mate and his wife decided that they were going to being their 8-week old newborn to the footy, and wanted to park at Gloucester Park for the convenience. Having given the pop-up Bridge Bar a run last week, we decided to give JP’s Bar (in the Gloucester Park grounds) a bash. This will be an abridged review, basically comparing JPs to the GP pop up, in case you were going to Gloucester Park and couldn’t decide which part to go to.

Walking time to stadium: 13 minutes (to Gate C) 16/20
The walk is about the same as from the Bridge Bar, but was even speedier this week because they had finished the steps on the northern side of the bridge. This was a pretty good walk, and because all of Gloucester Park is licenced, you can actually drink and walk some of it at the same time. Now that’s convenient!

Ease to get there: 7/10
As with last week it was easy enough. It’s $20 to park right at Gloucester Park before the game, but I think it’s only $10 to park at that big carpark outside the WACA.

Availability of seating: 9/10
You basically have the run of this place.

Beer selection: 6/10
Better than the pop up because you could buy draft in pints. They were in plastic glasses though.

Beer Price: 8/10
Pints of Swan Draft were $7. Bargain. Decent beers were at the cheaper end.

Quality / value of food: 6/10
They didn’t have the kitchen open for this game, but apparently they will next year when they sort some issues out with the council and market this play on game day. We popped over to the van at the pop up to get a burger. It was still pretty good.

Wait time for beer and food: 8/10
Easy peasy.

Good for kids: 8/10
There is a huge grass area and heaps of space. If you have little tackers that like running around and kicking a footy, this place is really good.

General Vibe: 7/10
For reasons I can’t really explain, I really liked the vibe. There’s something interesting about being at an empty pacing track before the footy. The GP grounds are actually pretty nice during the day. It’s a bit like when you walk through Northbridge on a sunny afternoon and you go ‘oh wait, this place is actually quite pleasant once they hose out the vomit.’

Overall: 75/100
I reckon this is worth a bash if you feel like parking and walking cross the bridge. Saturday was a cracking day, there’s plenty of space to sit, you can see the ground and bridge in front of you, they have FoxFooty playing on the racetrack finish line screen meaning you can sit out in the sun and still watch a good game of footy, and the kids can run around like idiots without causing anyone any trouble. I would probably choose this place over the pop up bar for now.

Season venue review and awards to follow.

End of Season Review

What an adventure. It was an arduous task trialling as many pre-game bars as possible, but someone had to do it. Many of us had a regular place to meet before games at Subi, which is what I was looking for again. I’m not sure our crew really settled on a new regular, and I think where we spend our time before games next season will vary a fair bit depending on Freo’s schedule and the make-up of the group.

The final leader board looked like this.

The Best
Dutch Trading Company (Vic Park): 80 points
Five6Eight (East Perth): 78 points
The Grosvenor (East Perth): 75 points

The Rest
The Royal (Claisebrook): 74 points
The Camfield (Optus Stadium): 70 points
JPs Bar (Gloucester Park): 75 points
The Bridge Bar (Gloucester Park): 70 points
Bright Tank Brewery (East Perth): 66 points
Blasta Brewery (Burswood): 65 points
Skyview Room (Optus Stadium): 64 points

Final Verdict

Of the best, DTC landed in the gold medal position, and it is certainly a great place to get a pint and a bite to eat; but its distance from the ground means it’s probably best suited to a Sat night game where you can take your time a bit. The same probably goes for The Grosvenor, which is a really good pub, but still a fair walk. Assuming we receive a similar Sunday-heavy schedule next year, I think we’ll be spending a fair bit of time at Five6Eight - but as it is a small venue that might depend a little on how popular it becomes. I can also see us popping into JPs at Gloucester Park for a Sunday game where some of our crew decides to drive.

Not reviewed

There were a few places I was keen to get to but ran out of time this season.

It didn’t seem like my sort of joint, but I thought the deck at Ku de Ta might have been worth a try given its proximity to the ground. Turns out it wasn’t really anyone’s sort of joint, because it went into administration before I had a chance to try it. If any business can survive there, and if parking is available, I think that Point Fraser area could be handy before games.

There are a few pubs like the Empire and the Carlisle on train lines just before the stadium that could be worth trying. A few of my friends come from the Northern suburbs, so that wasn’t really an option for us.

As discussed above, places like PICA, Petition Beer Corner and The Globe could work well for those catching the city shuttle. Given its location Hadiqa in the new Westin Hotel precinct could also work.

There are heaps of places at Crown that could work well, but as discussed, I reckon Packer has been given enough of a free kick.

User Scores?

As with all topics on Dockerland, you’ve probably heard more than enough from me. I’d be keen to see where everyone else landed this year, especially any places I’ve missed. The late-season completion of the footbridge might also have skewed my reviews a little, especially as it relates to how busy a place is, so I’d be keen to know where people’s opinions of a venue have been different to mine.

Happy drinking (responsibly).

Jp's Bar, the Bridge Bar, at Gloucester Park??? WTF, they should have ninety points each deducted for not being the Mount Eden Bar & the Pure Steel Bar ( or Village Kid or Binshaw, or Dainty's Daughter, or ……)

Really enjoyed your reviews Morgan. Thanks
Our crew have settled on 5SiX8 central location, walk to the CrayPot via Matagarup and back to the car post game via Windan.

Matt, I assume JPs is an ode to JP Stratton who was the godfather of trotting in WA..
Agree about the Bridge Bar name though....surely something a bit more imaginative wouldn't be too hard and trotting themed of course.

Nice work Morgan
As the season progressed and the weather got a bit miserable, we moved from the sky deck down to the River Room where they’d have a guest speaker which admittedly can be a bit naff, but we’ve seen some good ones over the last few games including Stephen Michael an Clive.
Overall much better than I expected and I’m glad we forked out the extra $100 because we don’t really feel comfy at the Camfield

Let me know if anyone wants a review of the Carlton Hotel on Hay St. We've just got Matilda Bay bitter on tap. No CUB haven't brought it back in.

Cheers Morgan. I've seen a fair bit of purple pre-game at the Globe, so it must be promising.

I've been to Five6Eight a few times this year, including this week. I agree it's much better than the Royal and more suitable than Bright Tank, but they still need to sort out their food a bit more to warrant a strong score from me. That being said, it would easily be my East Perth preference.

Thanks Morgan.
I took your advice on DTC on Saturday. Lunch, a couple of porters was great. Planned to walk to the stadium, but as we left the buss arrived so we jumped on. Took a stab at the Canning vale bus after the game that dropped us out the front of DTC. Which led to another porter!
Deserves your gold medal review
