It was good to have a win at the new ground. It was a particularly good feeling to have a win against Essendon. The feeling around the place was very positive: the stadium is certainly an upgrade on Subi and the team showed some truly promising signs for Freo’s future. I’m hoping we can repeat the performance a few times this year.
Our four newbies were a pleasure to watch and brought energy into the team. Whenever one of our new boys went near the ball there was a sense of expectation that something good was going to happen and as the game went on you could see that they were settling into their new found roles.
The team played with aggression and belief and it was good to see Tabs slot a few and I feel we have a full forward. The combination of our backs worked a treat Johnno Pearce Hamling Blakely Ryan and Wilson showed some strength and resolve. To see the Langdon slot a couple at the end of some quick passages down the flanks makes me think the future is going to be bright.
Our mids did some pretty impressive work all night and gave great support to our defence and to our forwards.
I hope RL leaves the team play again without change. IMHO they deserve that.
The Suns come over to play their home game as an undefeated opponent if our boys can bring that same enthusiasm into the game then I think we can look forward to another win.
BTW the post game celebrations were terrific.

Really enjoyed the new stadium. Renewed my membership at the very last minute and got a seat behind the goals at the city end, 6 row back from the fence. But the view is excellent, and the big screen works a treat when the ball is right down the other end. Bought a nice long macchiato which I had in my seat - very pleasant.

Interesting that in press conference that johnno was "fantastic" but no such praise for other defenders. Me thinks he may be a little protective of his veterans...I mean johnmo was ok but the big jobs were done by the other backmen. I did get concerned early on when johnno was alone in 50 with Stringer. That should not happen.

Suker you have to know how to read Roly. (I'll try) Maybe he was saying MJ played well enough to hold his spot. Sometimes though I think he is saying something else than it first appears. Like 'he's a big bloke isn't he' – meaning for a big bloke he's not using his height to advantage. Or like when he says so and so is an athlete – meaning he lacks other skills or when so and so is a seasoned athlete and served the club well – meaning he was a good player but his time has passed - if you get my drift. He doesn't need to bag his players publicly and probably shouldn't anyway. MJ played well enough to not end his career this week. But there are others lining up to take his spot but so long as he performs he has a spot. Roly is careful about what he says about his charges And isn't that how it should be?

There's a lot of things coming together but for me, the real news is Alex Pearce. This is guy looks to be filling the massive hole left by the departure of McPharlin. I always though he'd be the hardest player to replace. Our backline has not really worked post-Luke.

Pearse is the guy to structure the back half around. Absolute selection coup at pick 37.

Yeah, roly should not bag players publicly...that is not a good look and I am glad he doesn't. And yeah, roly saying johnno wss fantastico is really a defensive statement...after calls for a changing of the guard. If I was a coach I would say what I really mean, all of the time and everyone would laud me for my courage and honesty.
