TOPIC: Freo v Essendon

Let’s not underestimate the ground dimensions. While we’re an anywhere, anytime team, Optus is our MCG. The side last night was a quick running side with our HBs line breaking prowess that did the damage. Opposition sides will struggle matching our speed and if we continue taking risks with our angled kicks, we’ll win more than we lose at home. The 16 point margin last night flattered the Bombers. They were cooked.

McCarthy is a far better kick for goal than Mayne and if not for clipping the post a couple of times last week - he’d have 3-4 goals this year already.

I don’t think anyone expects/ed Cammac to be a power forward. It certainly wasn’t his role at GWS.

Let’s remember he’s only 2 cm taller than Fyfe and is the same weight.

I think we may have finally found our KPP forward in Tabs (along with the resting ruckman), so that allows Cammac to roam around a bit more on a second or third string defender. He has such a smooth, efficient & effective kicking action that he will kick more goals than he misses over a long career in purple. Lots to be excited about!

Fair enough Jason. ...not sure about the smooth efficient kicking action though. Yep, he can roost it, but his set shot action is pretty ordinary. Maybe its improved this year...havent seen enough of it.?!
But drops the ball from too high and used to wobble it on the way down, resulting in a 50 /50 at best. Was a beaut long kick for goal last night. Can't fault it.!

Still, I accept that there's much room for improvement - he's got upside. ..I guess I'm just expecting a lot from a bloke thats now had 2 preseasons, and a year of footy. And, was definitely recruited as a Pav-type replacement.

Still searching for touch I reckon, and I'm a bit surprised by that, given hes now nearly had 18mths at the club. Still fumbling and looking rusty. Continue to hope things will "just click" one of these days...

Still....there were 3 blokes in yellow last night, and apart from decision making, they have one skill to perfect. One skill! And one of them was into his 300th!
Anyone would think they were bouncing it of a jagged rock last night....

So, I can accept some continued rustiness from Mcarthy, based on the example set by the fools in yellow.....

I didn't think too much changed from round 1 other than we seemed to make a few better decisions going through the middle, our skills were a little crisper, and we actually scored a few goals while we had momentum.

It was also interesting to see what happens to the opposition when Freo wins the ball. Almost all night Essendon had no-one in their forward 50 as they were trying to lock things down in the back-half, which made it hard for them to get any flow going the other way. But like Port, Essendon still hurt us a bit from turnovers, and at one point had scored 4 goals from 6 inside 50s.

I thought everyone played their role well, and I'm hoping for an unchanged line-up next week. Hopefully Brad Hill gets over his ACL injury in enough time to practise his kicking during the week.

At what point does Tabs become too valuable to risk injury in the ruck?

Agree Morgan - was desperate to get Sandi back in the ruck in the last so Tabs could go forward again.

I was thinking the only down side is we are going to have to cover the loss of Sandilands, Johnson and Mundy all at the same time. How do you do that?

Mundy at CHF looks inspired. Hope he hangs in there for a bit longer.

I saw a few slime supporters there last night. They were obviously feeling like they missed out last week. They were just there to cheer the Dockers boys on so that they could know what it feels like for a WA team to win at the new stadium.
My hats are off to 'em I gotta say!

I know stats can be misleading but, from memory, these blokes all slotted their first set shots at the new stadium last night:
Fyfe
Cammac
Sonny
Tabs
Ballas
Matera

Can add Mundy, Langdon & S.Hill who all nailed their first field shots.

Pretty handy that nearly the entire forward line hit the target first up.

I thought we won all 3 phases of the game last night. When we had the ball we moved it faster with more long kicks than last week. The new recruits were notable for how clean their kicking was (though not perfect use just yet).
When they had the ball our pressure was excellent, sustained and the Bummers didn't have the skill of Poort to get away from it.
And we won the contest too. Fyfe, Tabs and Ryan especially winning contested marks made a huge impact.

But we still didn't dominate. We had too many turnovers, which led to direct goals. In an alternate reality we don't turn it over so easily and so force them to mount their own attack rather than easy counters. Then they kick 5.14 and we thrash them.

That first goal from Maggie Tabener was a gem. Backed himself in and slotted it beautifully.

Id say, taking into account the run up to the Peel Finals last year, the JLT and now this match, that Tabs has improved in every one of his last 15 matches. He has got so much more upside its scary and may be no more than 50% along the way to where he will end up. For those Dockerlanders who urged patience with tall big men, take a bow. There`s every sign we have a real forward in Tabs.
PS And whilst Im at it, I will repeat my prediction from last year that Luke Ryan will be All Australian within 3 years. How good was he again last night!!

That front on tackle where Ryan stopped Daniher in his tracks, got him holding the ball and saved a certain goal was massive.

Certainly agree that Luke Ryan was brilliant last night if he and Wilson REALLY get their kicking boots on, there are some opposition teams that are going to get trodden on.
Ive got a suspicion the at Luke Ryan might push the "Best Mature Age Recruit Ever" trophy one day.

In my mind, this trophy currently belongs to Mickey B, but theres probably a few out thing that would suggest Priddis might hold that mantle.

Would appreciate any other nominations/suggestions??
