“It surprised me that they played three of the big talls down there, which I don’t think you can do,” Daicos said.
“They were too top heavy.”
The only comment Daicos made in the whole article about 3 talls selected as playing in Freos forward line, Yeti ( whether they stayed there or not is another matter, and if they didn't, an indictment on RoLy's selection policy and game plan). 1 paragraph out of 16. Get past the fact he is an ex Pies player and read the article, it is mostly a critique on Freo's style of play.
Morgan, if the players were allowed to play on and get the ball forward at all times instead of holding it up and waiting for the 100% sure option, our forwards would only need a meter or 2 of separation, and the opposition would not have time to set 2 or 3 players to obstruct and hold the player on the lead. That is what won Hawthorn 3 flags out of 4 GF's. Their skill level wasn't light years above anyone else, they just got the ball to forwards who were playing from inside the 50. We played a very similar style of play against the eagles in the JLT cup, using the corridor and moving the ball quickly and made them look second rate. Went back to our kick it sideways, wait for the last option, style of play against Port and looked second rate ourselves.
Players skills come to the fore when they play as they instinctively believe they should. When they have to stop and think about never kicking to a contest, always look for the man 20 meters in the clear, go backwards if you can't go forwards, and the rest of the "team rules" they are thinking about other things rather than thinking about hitting Tabs, Cammac or Fyfe on the tit with a lace out pass. That is why our skills look crap .
