TOPIC: Forward Structure

Melbourne have been rebuilding for twenty years. So have Carlton. That’s why the successful clubs refuse to even countenance the idea of a rebuild because it gives everyone at the club an out.
Fremantle’s problems are cultural and have been since day one. Polly is right that we need someone like Chocco in charge but we needed him twenty years ago. Still, better late than never.

Melbourne is an example of a club that can't put together a decent team, even when they've got a decent squad. That's the thing we have in common.

Some of us don't believe Freo have actually rebuilt. The core of the key players - Fyfe, Neale, Pearce, Walters - are still there and still have careers ahead of them. Mundy and 211 are near the finish. We drafted well and brought in solid players the last 2-3 years.

We are doing what all clubs do and turning over players each year. We just turned over a few more than most last season. It's hardly a 4 year exercise. That's just the club and coach buying time. Some supporters are buying it.

Well, get ready for more of the same.

According to Michael Walters in this morning's worst (it was left in a taxi, really) they do not intend to change the game plan. Based on what was displayed last Saturday, I can only think he means that against Essendon, we will no marking talls forward of the ball, use slow movement and then bomb it into a forward after its been flooded by opposition players, most of whom are taller than ours.

Maybe Roly could try doing what a football coach would do and actually pick his best 22, place forwards in the forward line (just for the novelty value if nothing else) and we could try doing unusual stuff like leading and kicking to advantage.

At the risk of being called negative, I'd have to say I'm positive that not kicking goals every week isn't a successful game plan. Roly should try coaching a whole game, not the half a game he used up until now. That or step aside for the good of the club

B1R1, Fyfe would not have been so knackered if he played as a full forward all game. You didn't see the likes of Dunstall, Lockett, Modra, (similar type of player to Fyfe ) Salmon & co to knackered to get the footy and kick goals.

Fyfe doesn't want to play forward RM, and when he does he is resting. My observation from the weekend was we were cleaned up in the midfield , and Fyfe wasn't at his best and was being knobbered. We were second at the ball, and were chasing tail. When we had it, we were trying to unload to players out of position trying to get back to position. Putting Fyfe at FF when we can not get our hands on the ball only see's him running down the ground all day long like a midfielder any way.

I don't understand why I hear "Cobblers do the cobbling", but don't hear Midfielders do the Midfielding and Forwards do the Forwarding type stuff.

Game plan - Kirk Style. Win the ball out of the centre, kick it to the leading forwards who are all leading to different spots. Forwards mark ball with outstretched arms. Forwards Kick goals. Repeat. Sing Song. Job Done

So Fyfe wasn't winning the ball in the midfield either, ergo playing him at full forward was not the reason why the midfield didn't get the ball. Play McCarthy up there, he hasn't set the world on fire as a forward. We have a plethora of mids who can get the ball forward.

I am also surprised no-one has mentioned the ineffectiveness of Neales many disposals. Pearce and B Hill cop a pasting for wasting the footy, but are no more inefficient than Neale.

Here's the thing to highlight Lyon's folly. Each year you cut about five, a couple get traded and two may retire. With trades in, senior and rookie drafts you are adding up close to ten a year as a matter of course.

That's a fifth of the list every year turning over, it's the nature of the beast. I realise not all clubs do it but I reckon it's close to par.

My point being every year all clubs re build, restump or whatever....some just do it better than others.
