TOPIC: Forward Structure

I think we'd all agree that our forward structure and entries were pretty haphazard on Saturday. Not content with merely lamenting that we should be better without offering solutions, I decided to set aside some time on Sunday to watch Sydney play, as they have been one of the heaviest scoring teams over the last 5 years.

Sydney kept their forward structure very simple on Sunday, keeping their full forward isolated in their forward 50 most of the game. It worked a treat, with Sydney kicking a winning score even in greasy conditions.

I think it's clear Lyon has overcomplicated matters, and he should just isolate his best key forward in the 50 and get our players to kick it to him. The only thing for Lyon to decide is who he plays forward: Tabs or Kersten?

Makes it difficult when the tall forwards have to go and help out in the backline because we went into the game too short in defence

What's that you're watching, Morgan? The Eagles game?

Oh...no, ummm, I'm just ..errr...not content with merely lamenting that we should have a better forward line structure without offering solutions so I'm...arrrr...watch Sydney play, as...ummm, they have been one of the heaviest scoring teams over the last 5 years.

Yeah. That's what I'm doing. Now shut the door.

Noticed that Buddy didn't leave the forward line. One on one with a defender at all times. But as we have always done, our forwards were all sent down in the opposition side of centre as much as possible.

Shane, are you telling me you don't derive any satisfaction in watching West Coast lose games of football? As I've said previously, I'd pay for a subscription service that notified me when West Coast were about lose. But I'd want it to be a flat-fee, because if it was per notification there's a chance it would cost be a fortune for the next few years.

So can I suggest that we isolate Fyfe in the forward line and the rest stay outside the 50 attack zone. I like that idea. But can we rely on the ball being kicked to Fyfe. Saw an incident like that on the weekend and funnily enough it wasn’t kicked to him. Doubt if that was the coach’s instructions.

Yep here's an idea lets play our best forward, forward, our best defenders in defence and our best mids in the middle.
Blind Freddie could see we should have played Hamling against Sydney, at one stage both Taberner and McCarthy were around the defensive 50.

But I'd play Taberner as the isolated forward. Fyfe should be part of the crew getting the ball to him. But if the opponents send 2 guys to Tabs, then we have a free man and can run the ball into the 50 and score.

Totally agree Morgan. I think we should have a forward structure like Sydney. If only Buddy played for Fremantle.

Fyfe, Darcy and Ballas or Banfield in the forward 50, Fyfe to mark it when it's kicked to him, Darcy to make sure no-one else does when it's not and Ballas/ Banfield to be front and square for the crumbers goal if no-one marks it. Simple structure, almost unbeatable given the whistle is used impartially and sustainable. Tabs is better utilized as a roaming half forward, and we have plenty of talented midfielders to get the ball inside 50 if they are allowed free reign to play to their strengths.

1. We haven't got a Buddy so forget the Sydney forward structure. Not for us.
2. For forwards to be effective we need the midfield to win the ball. Midfield structure is where it starts. I would get Fyfe back to the middle. With Sandi, Fyfe, Neale, Blakely and Mundy with Hill and Langdon outside we can win the ball out more often than not. Put Walters back to forward pocket. Front and square as they say.
3. Play Tabs from the GS, Kersten in the FP and McCarthy ranging far and wide and around 50 or more. Matera as a roving HF. Banfield as a defensive forward (tackle, tackle, tackle to hold the ball inside 50).
Will this work? Who knows.

If you want to play Banfield as a defender , put him in the back line. Our forwards need to be hungry for goals not bloody tackles. Tabs is a far better mark and field kick than McCarthy so play him up the ground, Fyfe is our best pack mark so play him inside 50. Kersten and McCarthy don't fit in the same forward line so one has to go to the backline or bench. Darcy and Sandi to switch through the pocket to add some mongrel to the forwards, and play that structure all day. Fyfe can win games, a flag, and a Brownlow from inside 50, no-one else in our side can do that. Why waste that talent. And Fyfe is fit enough to run games out, don't worry about his running and set play confusion at training, get him kicking at goal for an hour or more.

In a functioning forward line Ballas has plenty to offer, and he would be ideal changing with Banfield. The only time Mikey should be in the forward line these days is when he is mounting a guerilla attack on goal, and he can do it 6 or 7 times a game. He is one of our best midfield ball winners and the best kick bar none. let him run anywhere and everywhere, he loves it.

Yes, irrelevant because Buddy is Buddy.

How many marks did Fyfe clunk on Saturday? 1 actually (for the full game) - CamMac 7 and Tabs 9 (the same as Bud). How many in the forward 50? Can't remember but not many I suspect.

My only thoughts are to avoid the pockets and look to constantly punch it in from the wings - set up a good scoring shot. If you can't roost it in, run it in.

I think there would be more ideas to gleam if you looked at Port' s forward entries than Sydney's.
