I don't think I'm alone in thinking that we were beaten before the game started by our perplexing team selection this week. I'm not saying we would have won if he played but we went in with two talls against their three and they kicked eight goals between them. Also Hamling was clearly are best and most consistent backman last year and we decided that Pearce who hasn't played a full game in two years and Johnson at 33 and probably in his last season would be better options.

Then the coach comes out and says how they were big men we were playing against so we did we pick such a small side? Mind boggling piffle from the king of spin.

To say that Hamling was underdone after missing a game due to his father's wedding and then see him come out and dominate in an admittedly one sided WAFL game proves that he wasn't. (see below).

For a start he plays as a key position backman and doesn't have to run all day. To then go and pick a guy renowned for his running in Brad Hill who was clearly underdone smacks of hypocrisy. Hughes who was an emergency was even more underdone and not even given a chance to get any match practice at Peel which will make his chances of a recall next week remote you would think. Well most would, but who knows with this selection panel.

And let's not even go into the selection of D. Pearce because the only reason anyone can come up with is that he is filling a spot until Stephen Hill comes back. Well that's likely to be a few weeks off so heaven help us if he is our best and only option.

Maybe I'm looking for things that aren't there but some might say that just maybe there was something dodgy behind all this, but whatever I still believe it cost us dearly.

The 24-year-old commanded the air in Peel's defensive 50 on Saturday, taking eight marks in a watertight backline, while Brennan Cox (seven) was also rock-solid.

"(Hamling) played well and I think he might have had 20 or so possessions, so he's had a pretty solid game," coach Cam Shepherd said.

"I don't get involved in Fremantle's selections but certainly he ticked that box today."

The fantasy about Pearce covering for S Hill is a load of twaddle. S Hill actually hits targets and tackles really well, he actually gives us inside as well as outside coverage. D Pearce covering for him? Ridiculous notion. If it is a covering role, like as in, we will use him until S Hill returns, then why wouldn't you go for a Cerra or a Hughes or a Crowden...or any mug wandering around outside the gates before a game. Anyone, please!

there is a limit to the number of newbies you can play in a team. We effectively had 5.

5 newbies, or 6 newbies? Where is the rules governing newbies. We have a solid core of seasoned players, newbies should be well-supported. But a newbie making the errors of a 200 gamer is much more palatable to me...at least there is upside to a newbie making errors.

Once again we had players selected who looked like their hunger for the contest and game was well past them....they don’t need to be named they were easy to spot. Get games into the hungry young players who want to prove a poInt. If Sean Darcy is fit you play him every game, he’s a gem. Logue and Cox should also be ahead of a few others.

the point is that they make mistakes

Mistakes are ok, but when a 200 gamer keeps making mistakes or is more inclilned to make the same mistake then why not gamble on a younger player to develop them quicker?

It doesn't matter whether they are new, old, second hand or unknown, you pick your best 22 and Hamling & Darcy are in that 22. Pick them.

Larkin,

We had 2 players new to AFL yesterday. The other were new to the side but experienced AFL players. You can't call them newbies.

There is no point in playing guys who we know are not AFL standard. Play the players who might be.

There is also no point in saying we can't play too many newbies because we might get smashed when we are going to get smashed anyway.

In spite of your comments elsewhere about not blaming the coach, we should do exactly that. Right now, he's in Damien Drum territory. The emperor has no clothes and the coach is a dud

Yes, of course, Fyfe had a dirty day along with Mundy and others...but generally the likes of Mundy and Fyfe are top performers. It is the consistent turnover players with vast experience I am talking about...why persist with them? Why not let newbies make the mistakes, see what they can do...can they learn, etc. But 200 gamers making the same mistakes cannot be tolerated, surely?

I dunno why Hamling wasn't played. It seemed like a mistake to me - but they must have had their reasons

Quality Players like Fyfe, Mundy, Hill are affected by the pressure of the mistakes being made around them....it reaches a tipping point where their effort is tsunamied by the surrounding dysfunction.

so T Y 'There is also no point in saying we can't play too many newbies because we might get smashed when we are going to get smashed anyway.' .................. is that because the coach is a dud or because we dont yet have the experience to win against a good side? If we played more newbies and lost by more you'd blame the coach anyway.
