TOPIC: Dual Narratives

I think it's pretty clear Lyon has wanted it both ways. Rebuild is an excuse for poor performances, wins let him say everything is ahead of schedule.

Rebuild buys time, but for 3 years he's still played too many players not considered part of the future. Sure, they're needed for depth and experience, but he played them all regularly as long as they were fit.

I see the same old same old. We've got some very handy new players, who fumble it with the best. The endeavour is there, but the ability to play a coherent game plan is not. Same lacklustre i50s, and butchering it when it gets there. Skills remain poor, organisation remains disorganised, too many A grade players can't hit targets by hand or foot even when not under pressure.

But new blood is all we needed, and patience with them? Mine ran out long ago. Lyon isn't the bloke for the job. He manages to turn marquee players into crabs with his approach to football.

I think you may be right drubbing - but who would you put in? I'd like someone like Beveridge, whom the players seems to play for. But I'm not sure who's out there ATM. Kirk?

Dunno, but you'd have to go with someone with fresh new ideas. The days of recycling past coaches are gone.

At the end of round one, can someone find out the number of games experience that each team had on the park. If we are in a rebuild we should be in the bottom third.

Could anyone else really do much worse? Plenty of clubs taken a punt on newer coaches. Kirk won't come back, and I suspect it's no coincidence we took a big dive when he left.

Freo felt it had to bag one of the big name coaches, because we previously couldn't get anyone with decent experience. They won't back down on that, becasue they staked everything on it. Lyon is enjoying the ride on the big money offered to get and keep him. Meanwhile Freo are still going nowhere every year. 2013 is now half a decade away. Lyon is not improving anything at all.

The faces are changing with the team, but the same crap gets served up each year.

If you want to get in new people forget the coaches and try to pick up Hawthorn’s list manager. Their capacity to get quality players makes it a bit easier to be Clarkson (or maybe Clarkson is part of the attraction and RoLy isn’t?)

McCarthy, Matera, Wilson, Hill and Hamling you would think would be quality players we have got in, WTB, plus some good draft picks. But why is it that other clubs can use these players to their advantage but when they come to us we get very little? Or very little team improvement?
These guys all looked great at other clubs and we here on Dockerland were positive and excited to seem them come to us so If it's not the players then surely it's the coaches.

I agree Corp. I’m not sure how much chicken and/or egg is involved. The Hawks seem to be able to identify A graders (Mitchell and OMeara are the two latest). Indentifying the right talent is one thing, getting them is another and then developing them is the last step. Somewhere we are falling down. All the guys you mentioned are clearly talented but will they become A graders. Hill on his day is but the others have a way to go.

We could have had hawthorns entire three peat premiership side and with Roly at the helm not made the finals. Brad Hill was pick 33 in his draft year, we had 3 picks before the hawks took him, was he better than Sheridan, Crozier and Forster or was he just developed by much better coaching staff?
My money is on the latter.

Good point. Look at how head chookless B Hill is starting to look under Lyon. Sure, his failings would be less noticeable at Hawks, but if he had that many he wouldn't be in the best 22 and playing in their premiership teams.
