Watching the game, I can't help but think this isn't a rebuild at all.
A rebuild in my mind is when you play new players. To me, people that fit into this category are:
Banfield, Brayshaw maybe Tucker
That is 3.
Here are the people that won't be in the team in 2-3 years time that I don't think should be playing today:
Ballantyne, Johnson, Sutcliffe, Pearce (of the Danyle type).
Sandi and Mundy won't be round forever but I still think add to the team mix (can't have all young players).
So the dual narrative isn't "we are re-building but anything is possible". The dual narrative is "I am playing the old guard, but using the excuse of a rebuild".
