TOPIC: Port v Freo

I'm glad you notice tgti. I wondered if I'd been watching the same game as everyone else. The treatment of Fyfe should have resulted in half a dozen free kicks. Early on in the game Sandi was shepherded out of a ruck contest by Ryder, and nothing happened. It was just a straightforward ruck free kick.

End of the day they ran harder and for longer, so players in space with time to pinpoint it better. We did bomb it and got very predictable. We tried hard but wasted it a lot. Not sure the continued selection of certain players who continue to give the same low level input would be good for team morale. There needs to be a selection process based on merit, form AND need. This doesn't appear to be consistently the case.

We tried early, no doubt. Maybe less later on. Faded badly and need leaders to lift others through. I think I can make a case for some players to lead but that counts for nothing. Let’s see over the next couple of weeks.

We were crap.

Most disappointing bit was the lack of on field leadership when things get hard. None of the so called leadership group stood up and lead by example when Port started getting on top.

I compare this to Richmond, Carlton kick the first 5 goals. Jack Riewolt, much maligned in these forums, hits the packs in the forward line and imposes himself on the game opening up the forward line and lifting his teammates Martin , Cotchin lift in the midfield winning the hardball and bringing their teammates into it.

I didn't see Fyfe, Mundy, Walters etc do any of this, our on field leadership needs to lift and lead by example.

It was a very poor start to the Season I try to take out a positive and only one I can find is Brayshaw and Particularly Banfield were OK on debut. Other than that nothing.

The most disappointing bit for me was the fact that people on here said the game would go the way it did, not because they are geniuses but because its rinse and repeat from previous years.

Why can't our coaching panel see the obvious?

Freo management must now either start dictating to coaches to change their approach or start replacing them.

We need to completely revise our training with skills and fitness as the top two priorities. No game plan can be successfully implemented without the basic skills to enable that. Skills when tired must also be trained into players.

Team selection must be revised. Players who have consistently been poor should not be selected. People on here have said we shouldn't play too many youngsters because we will get smashed on the field. So our response is to play only a couple and get smashed anyway.

Getting games into the likes of Sutcliffe, PearceD and even Ballantyne will give us nothing. Play those who are to take their places. At least when we get smashed, they will benefit from the extra experience.

As for our coaches, do they have KPIs they need to hit? Its all very well for Lyon to drop players who don't meet the right skin folds but if he can't meet his KPIs, should he still be there? Its well past time the management actually started managing

I’ve previously defended Lyon as a coach but yesterday’s shambles when we have a good amount of talent at hand was deplorable.
Wrong selection and positioning of players and we were out coached, possibly because we’d selected the wrong blokes.
Only 1st round but we’ve been here before and it’s not looking good. Part of the reason being is that some of our senior leaders aren’t really leaders and when the going gets tough they don’t lift others around them. Time to play the hungry young ones.

I love to see some of the anti-Lyon league of grumpy old men show me their player quality match ups between the two teams. Seriously.

As far as I can see we were simply outgunned. We have a handful of quality players who might be equal to PA guys then a big crowd of hopefuls, and a bunch who are due for replacement and/or have never made top level. We might arguably match them in the mids on a good day, but are way behind in the backs, and are killed in the forwards.

Maybe someone can enlighten me?

jimb,

You miss the point. We don't match up well because we don't do what is needed to match up.

We need to improve our skills to AFL level. That means more than 20 minutes skills sessions. That is a long standing coaching issues. maybe some of those 'bunch who are due for replacement' could have been successful had our coach done what successful coaches do and spend time getting the basics right

Its not rocket surgery

Some people (coaches ) learn from mistakes and move on but some just keep making the same decisions and the same
mistakes is just stupidity nothing else !

If it hasn't worked for the last 3 seasons why would you keep doing the same thing ?

dumb football .

Being a competitive team for once against good sides, would be a start.

Freo have drafted and traded well for 2-3 years. Trading has brought in good experienced players.

Who can tell a difference? Even our A grade players skills are crap.

And you look at that team on paper and you say to yourself the same things you said to yourself when Damian Drum was our coach, "maybe it's not a flag winning side but we are far better than that".
