Who decided that someone not influencing the game, but running past or even trying to change direction and get out of the way should have a 50 metre penalty imposed against them?
Lost count of the number of times this happened in tonight's game and in not one instance was the player too close attempting to do anything to the person with the ball.
Some knob end on the rules committee coming up with an unnecessary rule when the umpires could just warn a player, as they do with a player on the mark. Then in typical umpiring style they go completely ott in officiating it.

Yes Randolph, it was over the top. A player has to give a ridiculously4 wide berth when running by...should be, if he is too close then he can't tackle...play on!

One of the problems with profession sport is that coaches are bastards. Get rid of the penalties for encroaching on the mark from behind, and Clarkson will have a guy jogging behind the kicker (or running 5m beside him) every time. Technically he wouldn't be affecting the play, until the bloke plays on, in which case he lays a tackle. If the umpire shoes him away, all it does is slow down the game which disadvantages the team who won the ball.

Yeah, they probably were overly officious tonight, but lets not let the players off too lightly. It's not that hard to avoid running within 10m of the bloke with the ball. NicNat made it 5 or 6 years in the league without ever being within 10m of a guy who marked it.

Nah... the one I saw, in the last Q where to Richmond player was running off, away from the player with possession with his hands up...? He had his hands up because he knew he was in the wrong spot and he ran 10 m to get into the wrong spot.

By Rd 8 they'll be pinging the mirrors off a different disco ball and letting blokes get away with a lot more but for now they're red hot on it and that's just the way it is. Morgan's right... especially about Clarkson. For years, Hawthorn have shepherded the player in possession and people here have commented on it. I hope they continue with it actually and protect that possession, you've won it so you deserve to use it without having some peanut waving his arms around in your peripheral vision asking you whether you've got the NBN on yet and if it's as fast as they say or whether you've given any thought to trying out bamboo fibre underwear with its superior ventilation and moisture wicking properties.

I mean, bugger that.

The players should all have known this was going to happen, it was the only rule change over their summer (extending the protected zone from 8m to 10m) so you knew the umps are going to be all over it the first 2 rounds. Hopefully by round 3 common sense will creep back in and players actively trying to exit the zone will not get pinged

Umpires never work by the common sense rule. In one of those instances Cotchin was past the player on the mark when the fool blew the whistle.

And they can't even judge a kick travelling 15 metres properly so I would doubt their judgement on 8-10 metres from a player.

Umpires aren't allowed to show common sense. Coaches wanted consistency so the AFL removed discretion from match day decision making.
