Seems to me a lot of people holding onto sour grapes since Harvey was sacked, and with a fall in success over the past couple of years using that to vindicate long held views.
I will be clear, I loved Harvey and was angry when we got rid of him, So much so that I rang talk back radio shows to vent this frustration. Once we became genuine contenders and gained the respect of the competition coupled with Pavlich’s assessment of Harvey in his book, I have to accept that the club got it right.
I remember thinking we had a very good group of players going into 2013, in hindsight maybe not so much. A player group that included Dawson, Spurr, Mzungu, Mayne, Duffield, Clarke, Sutcliffe, De Boer, and Suban, may have taken some reasonable coaching to attain this level. I love each and every one of these players and appreciate them for what they could bring, if you were to ask somebody from another club for their honest opinion, they may not be held in the same esteem. Looking back on this team does anybody truly believe that anything but an effort based game plan would have achieved more.

You can blame him for everything. Trust me.

He's not shy of hanging players out to dry, by the way...

but, to counter the pessimism. I'm not going to be satisfied with just making the 8. Last year Freo finished 14th with 8 wins. The chooks grabbed 8th with 12.

They'll plummet like a goose with a stone wrapped around its neck so there's a spot for grabs right away. The list is going in almost full strength this season, for a change. Fyfe's fit. A Pearse is fit. There's some serious talent in the wider group.

8th isn't good enough. They should be banging the back door of 6th down with an eye on top 4.

I've been to Base Camp. I know things.

Saw an interview with Fyfe the other day where the goal is the premiership, either he is off script (which I seriously doubt) or we are now willing to raise expectations. I don’t believe we are going to go anywhere near that, but for those complaining about no statement of intent it is beginning to emerge. If it doesn’t eventuate I am sure those that are inclined will use it to hang whoever they would like hanged, which is why people steer away from making this type of statement.

It's got nothing to do with Harvey and partially to do with Lyon's coaching in recent years.

But mostly for me it's the executives telling me they have engaged with stakeholders to refine the list management model to underpin sustained success moving forward.

There is a lack of authenticity to this mob and that's the core of the resistance in my mind.

It would be all so easy without 17 other clubs trying to win.
The Hawks defied the odds and had "sustained success" for a while, largely because free agency allowed them to top up their list with champions who wanted a premiership before they retired. I think we can say that won't happen for them now. Its also easy to forget that it took the Hawks a good few years to reach the pinnacle.
Sydney have sustained success because the AFL hands it to them on a plate.
And of course there is luck...

Criticism of Rolys game plan is ridiculous, Hawthorn, Dogs and the Tigers all played the same style. Hawthorn were elite at a number of levels.....you don’t win three GFs by being one season wonders. We were unlucky to come up against them.

We’ve been higher than base camp and lead there by someone who knows what they are doing in an AFL sense. Probably like getting to the summit, there’s a lot of factors at play and dare I say it but being a negative thinker wouldn’t help achieve that goal.

Fyfe is right, we have the team to contend for a flag this year. They only have to be allowed to play attacking footy for 100 minutes a game, for the home and away rounds and we will be top 4. Then the hard defensive edge we already have will come into play for the finals.

Even in '13 and '15 we only played attacking, goal kicking footy for a half a game then shut down and worked on stopping the opposition from scoring. In '15 in particular the rest of the contenders worked it out by mid season and then worked on hanging in til half time. Then all they had to do was kick goals in the second half coz we sure as hell were not trying to.

If Hawks, Dog and Tigers play the same kind of footy as Lyon's teams, how come they win doing it, and make it so much better to watch?

It ain't the same. They don't turn it over anywhere near as much. They play attacking footy. They have skills to go with the pressure. You can't win with that alone. I think Lyon has proven that pretty bloody conclusively.

Morgan Ross Lyon interview 6 years 1 month ago #51

The Bulldogs and Richmond in their premiership years, as well as Freo in 2013, were fun to watch because as a team they were irrepressible and they had enough star power to hurt the opposition when they got a chance, and take the game by the scruff when it was needed. There were nuances between the teams: Freo's manic tackling, Footscray's quick in-tight handballs, and Richmond's pace in their forward line, but the success of each team was underpinned by numbers and pressure.

Freo lost it's start power the last couple of years, and after being 'up' for a few years, couldn't catch lightning in a bottle again with the rest of its squad. Without high draft picks, it was unable to bring in quality youth overnight to being that injection of class and energy. I know Lyon cops some grief for taking his foot off the pedal, but I'm not convinced it was the wrong thing to do. There's no point cracking the whip when you're 10 lengths back.

I'm still not sure we have the list to contend - we're at least a tall forward short and could use a few more guys who can find a target out of nothing - but we've got a reasonably well-balanced list and I'm hoping Wilson can help up get the ball out of defence quickly, which was to my mind our biggest weakness the last two years.

The question is: do Lyon and the players genuinely think they are a chance this year? I don't think they do, and if that's the case they aren't going to play and train with the type of intensity required to put together enough wins.

My hope is we win enough games this year to be on the fringe of the 8, get our mid-range core a year playing together and the kids some experience, have another crack at the offseason and then give 2019 a real crack.

8-12 wins is probably the range this year, but there's a fairly big difference between those numbers.

I don’t doubt that RoLy WAS a good coach and got the most out of an average list at the Saints and an aging list at Freo. Unfortunately I haven’t seen evidence of him out coaching opponents the last couple of years. More over I haven’t seen a clear direction. As an example, if we are truly rebuilding why are we playing D Pearce?
Instead what I have heard for the last few years is formulaic marketing speak. You begin by looking at the current situation and you build a narrative around it that makes it appear to be part of a vwell orchestrated plan. You continue to do this as the situation changes and your narrative changes to allow for the continued sale of snake oil. Plenty of Generals have made retreats seem like cunningly planned strategy, and plenty of true believers have swallowed the propaganda.

D. Pearce is playing as back up for S. Hill and other injured midfielders / half backs. That's his role in 2018 - as a back up player.

Everyone knows he's not the future but you can't play an entire team of 18 year olds, or would you prefer to keep losing by 100 points?

Get over it.

I'm impressed at how good many of you are at recognising good and bad coaches. How you can tell the difference between a good coach with a weak list from a bad coach with a good list. I'm in awe of the people who glibly make statements like, "Lyon will never take us to a premiership".
I was especially impressed by those of you who realised that Hardwick had what it took to win a premiership when it looked like he was going to be sacked.

You can't keep a spanky new stadium filled with mid strength beer and $12 pies. Mid table is like week beer, it isn't good enough. Is that fair on the coach? Well, yes it is - he's there to produce something. He hasn't - came close once, but he hasn't. Fact.
