I used to be half as optimistic as Jezza. I know, I sought help and got better. 7 years of listening to Lyon talk his way in and out of stuff helped a lot too.

He had one game plan that got us to a GF. That burnt out the team, and AFL changes made that type of football unsustainable. Ever since then the team's looked lost and disorganised and inconsistent. He doesn't appear to coach skills, but systems.

He's got football round the wrong way.

I'll add to that. Yes we have improved personnel wise. We might even improve skill-wise if the worst is to be believed but its only addressing an item that 'negative' people like me have been saying for years. I'd love to take all the credit for being ahead of the coach but I'm only one of a great many who have been saying the same thing.

If our skills actually get up to AFL standard this year, the next step is to get a game plan that works under the current rules and can beat all of the other 17 game plans. As for being a slime supporter, thats about as accurate as everything else you said.

The thing is, I'm a Freo supporter not a Roly supporter

Yeti, clearly you’re an astute judge of our great game. But if it’s the coach that’s the issue, let me touch on the fact that 2 clubs entered the competition recently when we were a basket case, and both clubs thanks to the AFL, are well resourced perhaps more than they deserved. One club has now gone through 3 coaches and considered a bottom 4, the other, should’ve won a premiership by now. It that time we’ve made a GF and nearly stole the show. How do you rate Leon Cameron as a coach. He’s got the keys to a Ferrari, but it’s still stranded on the grid. Let’s see where 2018 takes us, you never know I might even come round to your way of thinking Yeti.

You should read my posts, Jezza, instead of just disagreeing with them.

My opinion of Cameron as a coach has been made very clear. He has the keys to a Ferrari as you say and could barely drive a Volkswagen.

As for those 2 clubs you mentioned, yes very generously resourced and both poorly managed which is why they haven't achieved anything. That said, we've been in the game almost 20 years more and have the same amount of success. It is likely though with the talent GWS has at its disposal, they will make the big one this year and I would not that most of the AFL captains share that opinion.

I would also note that EVERY AFL captain disagrees with you and Jeb55 that we will make the eight this year, even with an extra home game and a relatively soft draw.

Just so you know where I stand, we will still finish ahead of the slime up the road and those stupid clowns have sold off their 1st round draft pick. I'm going to be laughing all through the next draft day

I've got a Volkswagen, by the way... and I drive it like a Ferrari.

Freo was in a bad way when Harvey took over from CC and his first year was a train crash. His rebuild started at the end of that season and within a couple of years he had the team flying, playing a hardnosed brand of running footy. Injuries killed those hopes and RoLy took over.

There is no 'basket case' in those years. That's just selective memory used to try and jack up a point. By now, RoLy has had more than enough time to deliver and he hasn't. We were sold the idea of 'sustained success' and now you guys are trying to get all excited about making the 8. If all the hype, bluster and spin had any substance we'd have been camped in it for the last few years scaring the pants off the well panted.

We haven't and we don't.

If people choose to shoot holes in the 'let's get excited because we should make the 8 this year' balloon don't mistake that with being negative. That's being hardnosed and pragmatic.

Some would call it realistic.

It's past time results did the talking with RoLy. I do hope his investment portfolio is delivering some.

Therein lies the problem. In the 20 years prior to the new teams, our coaches were that good that we played in how many consecutive finals and a GF. Where was the grand game plan? Let’s not confused what sustained success is.

Don't make the mistake of using the past to excuse the present, Jezza.

You've been clanging RoLy's bell like a lead yak carting gas cylinders in thin air up past the Tengboche monastery on the Base Camp trail. It's a lovely sound, the peace of the mountains is highlighted by it ringing through the sunlight and it drowns out some of the harsh panting caused by the lack of air in the actual air... but it's a big hairy ignorant beast that'll happily shoulder you over the edge if you're silly enough to stand wrongside.

He's flogged the best generation of players Freo has had with a game plan that sucks the energy and life out of them. He's wasted some serious talent and while he got them to a GF, his experience of having been there three times prior wasn't good enough to coach them into dealing with being there.

The comparison is always going to be with the coach he replaced so dramatically. He's had twice the amount of time and done nothing much more. We'd all love to see it work but let's be realistic about what's going on, eh? Pretend is just insulting the intelligence.

I don’t think you can blame Roley for the bad kicking in the 1st quarter of the GF, the inexplicable decision of Ballas to try & kick a goal when Sonny was practically on the goal line screaming for the ball, the numerous decisions that went against us from the umpires, I could go on but to be honest I’m trying to look forward to the season coming up but reading through all these comments I’m getting more depressed by the minute
