Yeah, everyone always says how amazing it is that LeBron James manages to land on teams with great coaches.

Let's just say that reputations are being shredded here with all these admissions of basketballing.

We all have skeletons in our closet. My mum pulled me out of footy when I was about 12 because I was the smallest on my footy team and I got a few concussions in one season. Big tick for forward thinking there Mum.

Then she suggested I play basketball instead, which seems a strange choice for someone vertically challenged. Still, I guess it was better than soccer.

I got to go back to sucking at footy once I grew a bit. Those early concussions probably explain a few other things though.

I've got nothing against playing the game Morgan, it's when people start arguing about it as if it was a sport that I get all shifty eyed.

Come on, Guy.

It must be a sport. It's got a ball and a goal at each end. What else do you need?

I must say I would be flabbergasted if it is true our coaches have placed a bigger emphasis on skills this preseason than previously.

It is a bit like being the shareholder of a confectionary company and hearing the Company say we decided to focus more on how the product tastes as that will likely sell more chocolate bars.

A lot of people can get really fit and run around in circles all day long or up and down a footy ground chasing the opposition but that doesn't make them a good footy player or team.

Skills are footy. All the other work players do is to get on the field and match the opposition in terms of strength and endurance. Very important but it is not the key differentiator. You can have the best game plan in the world but it is completely useless if it can't be executed.

A few here think it does, witness the defending of Tommy and Sutcliffe. If you are a good player, the opposition are chasing you, so you don't need to be as fit, but you probably aren't anyway because you spent your pre season and training keeping your skills above average. That is why you have the ball not them, I would keep going but it just ends like one of those circular cell reference error things in excel. But I think you get my drift.

I respect players like Sutcliffe and Sheridan. It is unrealistic to expect every player on a list to have brilliant skills and there is a place for those players that are stronger in other areas. It actually annoys me a bit when people focus on the shortcomings of a couple of guys when 80% of the team needs to improve at kicking under pressure.

For whatever reason we have seen across the board our team hesitate, hand ball to another player under as much or more pressure or take the easy option up the boundary line. This results in turnovers and our backline being under siege more than it should. Until this changes we will never be a great team.

For what it's worth I can only think of one team that was not as skilful as the opposition to win on grand final day and that was the swans in 2005. They won by a point thanks to playing a pea-hearted opposition. Luck and willpower got them over the line but this is rare in today's game unless it is wet weather footy or a highly skilled team just has a crap day.

Sometimes I wonder if I have logged onto an Eagles site, obviously it is easy to prepare an AFL team should be 18 premiers every year. We played off and choked in a 2013, finished top of the table 2014, overestimated the lifespan of playing group and rolled the dice again in 2014. Since then 20+ changes to the squad with players finally wanting to come to our club.
It has been extremely frustrating over the past couple of years watching our team underperform after going so close, but I still think we have a competent coach, for those that don’t propose another. Anybody that believes a new coach will immediately bring success again is destined for disappointment, as inevitably it will take a couple of years for their processes to be established.

Well...we may be able to execute a lot more efficiently this year with improved skills. And back to being a high pressure team...like every premier usually is. Good, I'm happy.

Where is the article about the fencing contractor being brought in to teach the boys to spend 30mins a day kicking the ball straight through the middle while standing in the 50?

Where are the comments or implications anyone expects he team to be premiers every year? Not even Jezza is that optimistic. A Lyon 4-peat is all he thinks is reasonable.

What they are expecting is an organised team, an AFL level of skills across the majority of the squad, to be competitive against top teams on a consistent basis and to win a share of them. To make finals regularly and not just be making up the numbers there. All the good team do this, regardless of personnel and injuries.

This is what I assumed as a supporter, they meant by sustained success. Lyon has had 7 seasons to work towards this. The admin a lot longer.

All I've seen in reality is marketing spin intended to placate the fans and hide the fact they appear have no idea how to achieve this. They make sure no time frames are given and no clear measurement of what it actually is. That way they can say and sell what they want, and the important thing is to stay on message.
