For the record, Sheridan was taken at pick 16 in the 2011 draft that had already been weakened by GC17 being able to pick underage players in 2010 (i.e., that would have been eligible for the 2011 draft). He was a first-round pick in name only.
For the record, here's the remaining picks in the 2011 extended first round (because GWS had a gazillion picks at the start) that came after him.
Clay Smith (pretty average)
Brad McKenzie (out of the league)
Elliot Kavanagh (out of the league)
Hayden Crozier (shows glimpses)
Josh Bootsma (out of the league by some distance)
Murray Newman (out of the league, possibly in prison)
Henry Schade (out of the league)
Sebastian Ross (looks handy)
Todd Elton (out of the league)
He has actually overachieved against that little cohort, although interestingly, there was better value in the second round.
If you want to throw shade at him because his kicking sucks and his decision making is below average that's fine, but criticising him for where he was picked is not only out of his control, it's actually unfair when you consider the context of that draft and the players taken immediately after him.
He's a below average AFL player who is destined to spend his time floating between Peel and the firsts. I've never understood the need for people to take such joy in sticking the boots into a guy who clearly tries hard but isn't very good. It's not his fault no-one has knocked the door down to claim a spot in his place.
