There is a former basketball player named Tony Ronaldson, who was nicknamed The Bear on account of him being, bluntly, a bit fat - at least for a professional athlete. Like actual bears, The Bear could not jump, but unlikely bears who have been known to move quite quickly, The Bear could not, meaning this chunky, white, slow, ground-tethered player looked to the naked eye like he was be a liability on defence. And yet, the Wildcats were a much better defensive team with him on the floor, despite him not really doing anything. The explanation offered by the coaching staff was sincere, though perhaps unflattering: he took up space. In short, his girth made it a bit more difficult for opposition players to move around close to the basket, which helped the team defence.
If you were to give Sheridan the benefit of the doubt, he must provide something that is not immediately apparent to the casual fan. Certainly he's no good with the ball, and he doesn't get it very much, but perhaps there is some unseen merit in him running up and down the ground not getting the ball. Like, he creates a good decoy, or his running back crowds the backline enough to dissuade the opposition from kicking it certain places.
