THE pre-game warm-up is dead.

Clubs will no longer be able to warm-up as a team on the ground other than briefly before the first bounce.

It’s understood the AFL has implemented these changes to accommodate more curtain raisers and fan activation initiatives.

It's about time they got rid of the warm up, bloody primadonna footballers spend 90% of their lives warming up for what, for two thirds of them, is an awful attempt to play football anyway.

But I don't like the idea of being activated. I previously proposed they hire someone to sit in on meetings and say "Nah, that's a stupid idea and a waste of money" perhaps they could also take on the role of saying "That expression makes us sound like complete knobbers. Why don't we just use words that normal people use ".

If Pete Evans thought me anything, other than sunscreen can't be trusted, it's that to activate fans you need to soak them for 24 hours in water, then dry them out again over a low heat. As a fan, I'm against this.

But I'm not totally against more time for nonsense before the game.

These stupid ideas aren't needed. Most people have a yak with their mates and settle in for the game. These stupid initiatives come from those breathless corporate wannabes that spot an opening to inject their 'ums' and 'ahs' into - they can't complete a sentence without going down a half-dozen side streets without ever articulating a single concept. We've all shared meetings with these people anxiously crammed into squirrel suits trying to make 'the big break'. I thought they all ended up on the ABC as breaking news reporters - I guess they're also at AwFL Control.

On the other side are the old traditionalists - you know, the MCC types that can't get the rhythm right when clapping to TNT. Once my footy buddy got us relocated out of some cheap walk up seats at the MCG into the members seats on the southern wing. Hawthorne were playing North (I think) and there were heaps of vacant seats on the first tier. Middle of the ground, spectacular view. We sat down in an empty row behind two old fellas, there wasn't anyone within cooee of them. They had a chessboard laid out on the empty seat between them and were frowning over it as much as they were watching the football. Every so often one would look up and say 'Well done or ' bad luck. True story.

Polly, you're missing the point. The suits are looking for advertising slots, and fan activation is their latest euphemism. We'll be watching people run around the boundary trying to catch a digital Virgin Australia aircraft, so they can score a return flight to Bali.

I really don't have time for any more activation before each game. By the time I ring that number on the letter my new credit card's stuck to, work my way through the automated menu to set a new PIN, and proceed to pay the cashier for my hot dog, chips and drink, I can only just make it back to my seat before the first bounce.

Never did a sport require fan activation (shudder) less than basketball. It's just highlight after highlight. Your team can lose badly but still score fifty times.

OTOH maybe that's the problem.
