As I recall, that day against the Saints, Walters played more like the old fashioned goal kicking wingman. A perfect fit for his skillset, and to play that role these days you have to be named on a forward flank because todays wingman plays more like an old fashioned half back flank. I don't know what todays half back plays like so don't ask. ( maybe go and see Sutcliffe and Sheridan for the answer to that, they may be the reason why the wingman plays like a half back et al.)

Walters is our classiest player, and by far out most skilful forward. We need him there. I am more concerned with Sheridan, D Pearce and Johnno playing all games so far. Prior reckons they want to get games into players...Does this indicate they are favoured for starting roles in round one...I sure hope not. Then of course there is Spurr (a Ross fave) who is a real fighter but surely we need young blood back there. Hughes and Logue must come in...

They play 26 JLT so 4 go out by default, Here's hoping D.Pearce and Sheridan are two of them .

D. Pearce was given so much space by the Toilet players in the second quarter as we kicked out of defence because they knew he would turn it over - he did five times out of five, three direct kicks to unmarked opposition, two out of bounds on the full. I started wishing we still had Zac Dawson to kick it instead. he was that bad.
Sure, our players could have made leads - but i reckon they did, only he missed them by, on average, 10 - 15 metres. This seemed particularly weird given who our back 6 were, or could be.
As for Walters - he is a brilliant small forward. Blakely is a midfielder. The Hills are wingmen. Any messing with that is, as has been said here so many times, robbing Peter to pay Paul. The upshot is that putting Blakely in the centre means that Hughes and or Logue can go back, that Walters can go forward, that Sutcliffe, Sheridan and D. Pearce can go to Peel.

It's disappointing to have spent 4 years passing up on key position players to draft midfielders and now be seeing our most gifted forward playing in the midfield to cover holes in there.

Our most gifted forward is not a key position player , So relevance a little lost on me .

Put him on the ball, he'll get you 25+ possessions and kick 3 goals

Mikey plays the fwd flank really well - that was his position all through his junior footy days.

Playing him through the midfield brings him into the game. It gets him up and about when he goes forward I think he definitely plays better when he’s had a stint through the middle
Playing half forward for Freo is a tough gig. I reckon Wayne Carey would struggle to get a kick at half forward with our game plan

You might be right, but Wayne Carey is no Mikey Walters.

The latest injury update suggests we have close to 40 players to pick from if we pull up alright after JLT2 on Sunday. With AB and BB, our juniors likely to be picked, it’s a good spot to be in. Port have injury concerns, their midfield aren’t world beaters even with Rockliff in there, but he’s underdone with an injury. They’ve got problems whether Mikey plays up forward or in the guts. They need to find someone who’s going to stop Fyfe.

Pav353 you've missed the point. My point was we have drafted midfielders for 4 years when we could have done with other types of players. And we are still robbing Peter to pay Paul.

Who is Peter and who is Paul you ask? I've confused you again haven't I?

Have to say I cringed every time Jarrod Brander got near the ball in the scratchy on the weekend. He looked good.
