He’s been used and is being talked up again as a mid. I don’t see Mike Walters being best suited or needed as a mid for us. While he’s very skilled he’s relatively slightly built for that role and for mine he’s a forward pocket every game, with Matera in the other one.

We looked a more potent scoring side SonSon went forward. Using him in the midfield is robbing Peter to pay Paul. A better solution is to get our mids to win their own battles

I know why people may want him in there, but he gets smashed by the bigger bodies, we’re talking blokes who are 192cm and 90kg plus. Just because Mundy or Fyfe are resting in the forward line doesn’t make having Walters replace them in the middle the best option.

I see Son Son as an 'outside mid' when required, like B. Hill is. Blakely is the 'inside mid'. It's possible Banfield could be a future 'inside mid'.

Our kicking into the forward line has been rubbish for years, and he close to our best kick, so I can see the attraction to putting him up the field. I reckon 60/40 forward is about right. Mind you, if Matera is as goal-hungry as I hope he'll be - or Bennell comes back at all, that might free him up to go into the midfield a little more.

I don't remember what position it was from exactly, but his best position is the one that he played in against St Kilda last year in Round 15, when he had 32 possessions and kicked six goals.

Dahlhaus, Shuey, Cotchin, Shiels, Coniglio etc are all built close to the ground and play inside mids. Walters for mine have exquisite foot skills compared to all the blokes I just mentioned and he’s a goal kicker. He’s perfectly suited to the midfield. Roly knows he’s onto something.

Against the Saints, Walters was named on a HFF. Given there is flooding around the ball no matter where it is on the ground, perhaps that's his best position.

Neale is the rover / extractor for centre bounces and stoppages. I can't see Walters doing that job.

I can see Walters kicking 3 goals a game and assisting in 3 more. I can't see Neale doing that - maybe one and one but not 3 and 3.

And as far as Blakely is concerned, he is a midfielder. Keep the guy out of the backline. Same goes for the Hill bros.
