TOPIC: Rookie for the Rising Star?

Corporal Agarn Rookie for the Rising Star? 6 years 1 month ago #1

Corporal Agarn
Only kidding with the heading, as Jezza has already outlaid a lot of money on Brayshaw, but while all the attention is on high pick draftees in these scratch matches both here and at other clubs this guy has flown under the radar and looked better than most. How did he slip through to the rookie draft?

Agree. He’s my bolster from the pre-season.
Perhaps more than anything this shows the risk of reading too much into 18 year old talent. To suggest that B.B. is ‘mature age’ is a bit of a joke- he’s barely out of high school. A great pick up.

It's unlikely that both AB and BB will debut in Rd 1. The winner of RS in recent years have come from debutants who've played in Rd 1. I'm sticking with AB to be well and truly in contention for the award. I see our Rd 1 team as follows:

B; Blakely Hamling Johnno
HB: Wilson Pearce Ryan
C: Hill Neale Tucker
HF: Mundy Tabener Ballas
F: Matera Cammac Kersten
Ruck: Sandi Fyfe Walters
Bench: S. Hill, Cox, Brayshaw, Langdon

West Coast Eagles Rising Star Hamish Brayshaw's brother Andrew's brother Hamish looked handy today.

Of course, that could just be because we've left coming up with a working forward structure until year 4 of the rebuild.

Hodor is still eligible for the rising star as I understand it, and whilst I hope AB an BB are up there, I hope for Hodor more.
I’m hoping - at least - he gets a nomination. The sooner the better!
Can’t believe you dont have him in your team Jezza... but I understand that its more because RoLy doesnt want the two talls in ...

Thats brave of you Jezza. maybe. Of our mature players you have missed I'd be inclined to include Spurr, move Blakely up the ground and maybe remove Cox – for balance – too many talls. But there is a good mix to choose from - with S Hill maybe not yet ready and with Tucker Ballas Langdon Cerra Log Hughes Bennell Brayshaw Grey all on the short list with a few others in play. Next week should reduce that list.

Dumb question but how does BB get to play round 1 if he's on the rookie list? Is it only if we pick up a long term injury to a player on the main list, or do we have a spare spot for an upgrade?

The rules have changed - rookies can play in the senior team with no penalties! BB a shoe in for week one - he’s a gun. Keep an eye out for Giro - huge upside for later in the year.

Right, thanks, I totally missed that. Seems like a great rule change to me.

On form you would play him, he is our form small forward. Especially as Walters is spending more time midfield I hope the match committee give him a go.

The other recruit who might work up forward is Wilson, I know he was recruited as a half back but we have a few of those that are pretty good and I think he could make a great half forward, he has great skills, knows how to find the ball and enjoys kicking a goal..

Wilson needs to stay across half back, we have been lacking someone who can hit a teammate 60 mts down the ground out of our backline for years. Why waste him waiting for the footy across half forward when we have recruited 3 or 4 in the last couple of years who are much better at that job.

Watch the gws-slime semi final from last year. 5.02 minutes left in Q1.
Wilson gets the ball at the top of the defensive goal square, runs 10-12 meters then bombs a 60m drop punt to a running target on the wing. That level of skill completely exposes zones and presses and is why we have recruited him and why he stays in the backline. With him, Pearce and Ryan in our backline, I'm going the full Jezza about our chances this year!

Add Logue in there too. That is four really decent kicks out of the D-50, and though Wilson may be exposed occasionally overhead, we can still say four really decent intercept markers with the inclusion of Hamling. I don't think there is much doubt that defensively, midfield-wise, we can easily cut it with the best. The forwards are the weakest link by some margin. Still and all, only second decent outing against crab-seconds,but 26 scoring shots looked okay if it can be 18 goals 8 points. That'd be a whupping in anyone's language. More than anything this year I want to see the team keep the foot to the throat whenever they get the opportunity, rather than the other way around.

Can't believe how quickly Hughes has dropped out of discussion for a position in our backline. Possibly our most consistent backman last year and can play big or small.
