I’m always intrigued as to why there has to be more than 1 leader on the playing field. Perhaps it’s the size of the ground. And why actually young player is anointed into the pack. We should just have Fyfe as the captain and everyone else just follows his lead. That’s why he’s on $1M a year.

I feel bad for Stephen Hill. For years I've maintained he's the better player of the siblings, and his yappy younger brother wins a bunch of flags, then comes home and wins a Freo B&F and is elevated to the leadership group ahead of him.

For what it's worth, if I had the choice I'd still take Stephen.

They probably added to it because there wasn't any onfield leadership last weekend in the dying passage of the game. I would have sacked all of them that were and made a couple of injured blokes dual captains. Simple really, if you don't know what to do get gotta there.

You've got to wonder how 7 pumpkins are better than 1; or, if you've got 7 peaches, are the remaining 30 odd a bunch of turnips?

There are 40 or so blokes in the squad and game day has 22 involved. It makes sense to have more than one ‘leader’ apart from the Captain...those days are long past.
Since Elvis left we have been crying out for someone to organize and instruct our backs on the ground. Likewise, since Pav left for the forwards. You’ve also got to continually develop leaders to take over or LEAD when the older guys retire to go marine sciencing or flying choppers etc.

Not really that much different to the old days when you had a Captain, Vice Captain, 3 Deputy Vice Captains and 3 Deputy-Deputy Vice Captains. But admittedly in those days, there was always a player or 2, 3 or 4 sisters of players and a couple of brothers of players who would decide to get married in the footy season so you needed a bit of backup for your captain.

On a tangent to that, who else saw Hamling's classic excuse for getting out of sharing a caravan in Strathalbyn with Sandi on the weekend?

"Err Ross, my Dad is getting married on Saturday, I won't make the game against the Crows. Sorry 'bout it"

You only need 3. The captain manages the players around his area of the ground, and you have a forward and defensive deputy, (or midfield, depending on where your captain usually plays).

Since the game got too complicated, everyone decided you might as well make everything else too complicated as well. Lyon has it all in a spreadsheet somewhere next to his skin fold charts.

I imagine for most AFL teams on game day that’s how it sort of plays out, not taking into account for the FFC when the Captain is off the ground having a rest from being knackerd from playing like two meer mortals.
The three L model would work well where you go to two training nights a week and rock up for a game at North Freo for a game on the weekend, and the spotlight isn’t on the playing group 24/7.

They certainly like to shoehorn in their narratives.
