He was a good player for East Perth & Fitzroy but then coached the dark side (E. Frem. & Slime). So good player,average coach.

Compare with John Todd, good player and good coach, even if he did coach the Slime for 2 seasons.

I think the point of good players make good coaches has been lost somewhat in translation. The good to great players will more often than not help a coach deliver a premiership. The Hawks 3-peat was more to do with champion players in Hodge, Mitchell, Burgoyne, Roughhead, Birchall etc etc. Whilst Clarkson received the plaudits, the players through blood, sweat and tears brought home the bacon. They're the players that made Clarkson looked good. It'll take a lot to convince me otherwise. The 22 players that have come through the door at Freo in 2016 and 17, will help Roly deliver. He won't get a better oppotunity.

I'm not sure about lost in the translation but a few facts appear to have gotten lost along the way.

The Hawks players actually didn't play as individuals but as part of a coherent team structure. Thats coaching. They played to a specific set of instructions ie short accurate kicking, looking to go forward, used tactics like shepherding the player on the mark, shepherding players away from their leading forwards, looking for leading forwards etc.

Little things like that are all coaching. Player don't function as a coherent whole just because they're good players.

Frankly, if Roly had that team, they would have been less successful.

Clarkson got the best out of what he had. Roly tries to fit square pegs in round holes because he is far more limited than Clarkson.

Year 4 of a rebuild and we he are still having conversations where you have rewrite history to justify poor results

Agree with most of that Yeti, just not sure how we are in year 4 of a rebuild? 2015 we were minor premiers, wheels fell off by round 6 2016, so I would say we are about 20 months into a rebuild. Having said that, the club has looked to short cut the rebuild by bringing in 4 “ready to go” players at the end of 2016 and another 2 at the end of 2017. Plus picking up a couple of mature draftees in Ryan, Banfield and Jones to add depth.

Take a look at how we recruited during the compromise draft. We drafted rookies and mature aged players the likes of Barlow, Mzungu, Spurr and brought in Dawson et al. It was more Roly getting the best out of those players when he arrived. Lets look at the Brisbane 3 Peat with the likes of Voss, Akermanis, Black, Lappin. They were champions and it wouldn't have mattered who coached them Then take Chris Scott when he went to Geelong. Won a premieship in his first year because he had a champion team. God, even I coud have coached them to a premiership. For what its worth, if you think Damien Hardwick is a better coach than Roly, then we're in a world of hurt.

Richmond went through a rebuild and the likes of Martin and Cotchin was part of it with high draft picks. Hardwick was all but sacked. He can thank his players for his continued employment. The coach puts a plan together and the players execute it. Roly is not out there dropping marks, missing targets, goals, and tackles. That's what players do. The champions tend to minimise the mistakes and consistently deliver.

Roly was signed up on a 5 year contract extension to oversee the 'rebuild'. It was all talked up that the rebuild was needed and signing him up for the long term gave security blah, blah, blah. This is year 4 of his contract.

Either you can believe what was announced by the club at the time or we can go with the do over process. ie after the first, Roly announced something like 'just kidding, now we are really going to the rebuild' and again the following year.

I'll cut him as much slack as he gives the players. This is year 4
