TOPIC: Robbie Gray suspended

I think we'll be better than last year, but Port added Watts, Rockliff and Motlop, so I'm not sure the gap has closed that much.

Another viewpoint would be that, for a variety of reasons, their previous clubs may have been happy to see the backs of messrs Watts, Rockliff and Motlop. Of course, they may also turn out to be the best recruiting move ever....

From the JLT match against the Eagles:

L Thomas - 3 kicks, 1 handball, 1 tackle, 0 goals, 0 behinds
L Motlop - 6 kicks, 2 handballs, 0 tackles, 0 goals, 1 behind
J Watts - 5 kicks, 4 handballs, 2 tackles, 1 goal, 0 behinds

Not sure we have all that much to be worried about..

And to add further into the discussion, our additions of Wilson and Matera and throw in Andrew Brayshaw, are they better inclusions than Motlop, Watts and Thomas. I reckon maybe Rockliffe could cause us a headache. But a Gray-less Port Adelaide will make the contest an even money bet now. So I like the odds on offer for Freo in that game. 4 weeks is a very long time in football though.

Assuming our preseason fitness work is better than last year, we should do better and I give the Port game a chance for us.....if Fyfe is fit and plays.

We never fare well when we start the season against Port - who could forget that 10 goal third quarter that killed our season on the home opener in '07.

To say that we have a better list is a logical thing to say - but they have a far better coach that knows how to win. We've got a cryptic excuse driven coaching department that will only offer up the 'it's to early to push the panic button' line after the game (and for a few weeks thereafter).

Port are better than us - can we beat them at home in the season opener? Sure we can, but not if our game strategy department doesn't wake up a bit.

I did see signs on Sunday, Polly, that either the coaching dept. or the coaching players, have gone to a more attacking and winning strategy, and given we can get 18-20 of our BEST 22 out there against Port, we should be a 4 to 5 goal better side. (Given that the AwFL don't recognize who Port play in the first round and Robbie Gray's suspension is not appealed by said AwFL)

I was surprised to learn that the Port fans I know don't rate Hinkley. The general consensus is that his brand of slingshot footy is too easy for good teams to shut down, which is why they beat up on bad teams in the regular season, but come a cropper against other good teams or in the finals. Their record against top 4 teams in the last couple of years has been abysmal.

Watts will be useful for them as a foil for Dixon and Ryder when he floats forward (stopping all three will be difficult). Rockliff seems like a knob but gets a fair bit of the footy, and Motlop can win or lose a game off his own boot. LT is probably just insurance if one of their small forwards gets injured or suspended.

Add those to a team that was one win off top spot last year, and that's a tough first round game.

Watts will fit in well at Port, a flat track wunderkind, Rockliff will find it hard to get in the action the way he likes it with a few ball getters and receivers around him, and Motlop can win, OR more often, lose a game off his own boot. I don't think Port have improved from last year, and Gray is a big loss for them against us.

In last year’s JLT series, we were 2W 1L against Slime, Pies and Blues. Rds 1 & 2 in the season proper was an outright disgrace. Some personnel in both games have since departed. We’ve topped up, with better skilled players and from what I saw on Saturday, especially the second half, there was change in our ball movement and the pressure around the contest. I remain steadfast that good players make good coaches. This and last season, we’ve brought in talent, if Roly and his coaching staff fail to deliver, I’d be very surprise.

I think our fitness prep and hopefully on field leadership will be better than last year.
Roly mentioned in the Jlt Crows game that the last three goals basically resulted from quick actions which required on field leadership to stop the scoring....better that’s learnt outside a caravan park in preseason than at Craypot or mcg.
The post match presser is worth a listen..if you think the coach has any clue about the game.

So, Jezza, you rate RoLy and the coaching staff as good players then? How many Brownlows and club F & B's have they got between them?

I'd risk the soft cap. Most of them look carp anyway.
