I'm getting thrown a bit under the bus there Hypen! I don't think one season is a fair representation of whether anything was a good/bad decision but I'd probably have things leaning towards the bad side at the early stages.

My main contention was the loss of SPS and the price we paid for him. As much as I do rate him, McCarthy has really struggled and hasn't shown what he can do for us yet. Being dropped from a side struggling so badly with very little competition in the key forward posts doesn't bode well but I have high hopes for his future. Logue has shown he's athletic but I haven't seen much of a footballer in him. I think he'll be a solid player in our backline over time but pick 8 was a massive reach for someone who isn't a match winner and costing us SPS was a huge mistake.

On the other hand SPS came off no pre-season to settle into a small forward role and even win best on ground honours for one game, picking up 3 brownlow votes from a flank. He looked amazingly talented and gifted in the limited game time he received and I certainly haven't changed my mind on that front.

Hamling was a much better get than I originally thought. I was wrong and he's gonna be handy for us over the next 5 years till he retires.

B Hill had his ups and downs but brought some run to the side early in the season which was desperately needed. Unfortunately as the season wore on he was worn down into RL's game plan and was mostly seen running back and forth across our backline, turning the ball over under little pressure. I hope he returns to the footy he played in his first half dozen or so games for us. I would have preferred picking him up on the cheap for this season as he came out of contract as I don't think 2017 was worth missing a kid around the early 20's in that draft.

Kersten is a middle of the road role player and lived up to that expectation. That's about all you can expect and I still think it was a mistake to pay what we did for him when we need to be developing a legitimate key forward option for the future and Tabs playing more often would have been more beneficial (or picking up another big kid).

Overall I don't think we did well in 2016 but it's still early days. We didn't do really badly although I think it was below par.
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

Not my intention at all. I think SPS will be a star. I actually forgot the detail behind the trade that you were critical of and that's when I looked up the draft. The later picks stood out: Cox, Darcy and Ryan look to be inspired latish choices. And Logue looks solid.

They did well. About time too.

I must say, Noddy, if Matera has to be told he needs to kick goals then recruiting him was a huge mistake.

The word solid is not what you want to hear used on a number 6 draft pick. Yes, it's early days and I'll be pleased to be proven wrong but I just don't see Logue as justifying the use of such a high draft pick. I would have been happy to see him picked up later in the draft particularly as in the draft calculations he didn't seem to be appearing too highly on the radar of other clubs.
He was more of a basketballer and rower, coming to football late. Wasn't an AA U/18 but looked quite pretty good at Swan Districts without being outstanding, which is similar to what happened when he went back to Peel last year.
I'm hoping he's going to improve steadily and personally would like to see him used in the midfield where he can use his best weapon-his strength and toughness. He's a big boy, reasonably quick and would be bloody hard to stop or hold up. The next Mundy?

Logue has some really great physical tools, and he looks like a goer to me. I reckon for a couple of years you keep it simple for him: play him in defence on the third tall, tell him to stop his bloke getting the ball, then hurt him going the other way. Leave the complicated stuff for the older blokes.

I reckon the worst case scenario for Logue is that he’s an Ibbo replacement (which is pretty handy considering Ibbo was probably on the fringe of the AA squad for a lot of his career). If he can add some strength to a 193 cm frame, keep his zip, and learn the rhythm of the game a little more, and he could be an excellent player.

Some people didn’t think David Mundy was going to amount to much. Some players are so good they look like they are in slo mo mode, Logue is one of those and in his second season, he’s a keeper.

Matera said in the interview Ross has told him when he gets the ball to play on instinct. I thought he usually coaches that out of players ?

If he was told to play on instinct, then that would be telling him to keep trying to kick goals. Some blokes aren’t very good at media interviews.

Said it before, Logue is the most likely player to get to contest, hard to beat one on one, and his field kicking is coming on great, particularly the depth. Highly rate. 20 more games and we won't be worrying about where we took him.

You know it's not about stopping goals or Kicking Goals .It's about bringing great effort!!

I reckon Logue is fantastic.... but he doesn't know where to go. If he can learn to read the play and anticipate where he should be, he will be an absolute gun.

Sounds like a slime description of Nic Not, RR. Or maybe Zac Dawson.

Fantastic but doesn't know where to go is surely a dichotomy.

Personally I don't think you can teach that to a footballer. It should be natural, an instinct. It's a worry actually if you don't have it.
