I am not sure this is the best way to showcase the game internationally. If other countries were confused about the game before they really would be now.

I find soccer boring but playing AFL on a a soccer pitch and being able to score so easily makes this even more boring to watch.

Not even sure why there is a desire to make the game international. It will never become very popular in New Zealand, South Africa, America or Europe. There is the possibility it could become popular in parts of Asia. But I really can't see there ever being overseas teams playing in the AFL. Tasmania isn't that far from Melbourne with a reasonable population and fan base and that is not considered viable at the moment.

I think the idea is to make a social game of footy easier to organise. Drumming up 22 players is a lot harder than getting 10. And you don't need a boundary umpire for throw ins. So while the have managed footy comps in the US for example, I think it would be a lot easier to get an AFLX comp going.

Did I find it fun to watch? Not really, because I don't care about the result, and caring about the result is what matters to me.

Good point. I'm heading down to the local soccer ground to bang in a few footy goal post. I'm sure someone down there will be delighted to give me a hand.

Probably not Shane, but if you were to head down to your local rugby ground you’d have your goal posts already in place, chuck a couple of cones either side to represent behind posts and your good to go.
What’s that, you don’t have a local rugby ground either, well that’s because you live in an AFL state, so this is not aimed at you. Imagine if you lived in nsw or qld and you might find they are everywhere. Now imagine you are a PE teacher in one of those states. You make the kids who “forgot” their PE clothes that day the goal umpires. You are the ump, Bob’s your uncle an AFL game that can be played in a 45 minute class.
Suddenly you have several hundred thousand school kids playing “AFL” who normally wouldn’t. The 10% who are any good actually join a team outside of school and play the real version on the weekend.
This is an invasion tool for the AFL to get into NRL states and should be seen and judged as nothing else.

To understand my post about posts you have to read Rogerocks's post which I felt neglected to mention the posts, hence I posted comments about posts directly in reply to his post which did not mention posts.

Yeah nah. It's the latest attempt from the AFLs marketing committees, that they can package up a game that will sell in the US and Europe.

Clearly, a $2.5bn local TV rights deal just isn't enough cake any more.

The image in my head, as a recollection of the game, is of Brad Hill taking a free throw from the point line while the crowd mumbled "Dee-fence" in zombie-like stupor of pure gillonistic dimensions. My favourite game was the Freo Lakers playing the Port Chicago Bulls. Irrespective of what and why it was, it was shite.
In other news, Justin Timberlake's new album is meant to be, equally unsurprisingly, equivalently shite. Just off to buy it now.

It's also a great game for sports betting agencies. It's a novelty bet mother lode.

If you lot could just untie your onions from your belts for a few minutes, I reckon you might see there's a little bit to like about AFLX along with all the things to loath.

It's a rubbish viewing sport. That said, I was neither more nor less excited watching it than I would be watching the NAB round robin. Part of the reason is that watching footy in February is dumb, and part is that sport is only interesting when there are stakes. The attempted razzmatazz was embarrassing, that's got nothing to do with the game itself.

But just because it's bad to watch doesn't mean it would be bad to play. In fact, it looked like fun. Fast, more one-on-ones, and less physical contact. That's pretty appealing for a casual ex-footy player if you ask me, in addition to the obvious benefits of fewer players.

On the posts, I reckon they should have just gotten rid of the point posts, meaning you could literally rock up to a rugby field and started playing.

As far as beta testing goes, I thought it was worthwhile.

I really hope AFLX doesn't become so successful it ruins the JLT pre-season comp

There's some weird ass theories being paraded in here to rationalise the thing...

it's a naked attack on the two rugby codes, pure and simple. Get kiddies involved and play the long game. It's also a way of challenging cricket for summer exposure without needing the ovals. Being craptastic is just a minor hiccup in the big picture.

If that's what it is, and to accept your premise I have to ignore a decade of evidence of crackbrainery, it's a terrible effort.
