Twenty-five years on from his defiant response to the racist taunting of Collingwood fans, Nicky Winmar will have his iconic gesture imortalised with a bronze statue later this year.

Somewhat controversially, the statue will be placed at Perth's new Optus Stadium, despite lobbying to have it situated at either Victoria Park or Moorabbin.

This will be great but it's ridiculous putting it at the Perth Stadium. It's Victorian history, not WA history.

Some Victorians hired another Victorian to make a statue of a player from a Victorian football club who was telling off some racist Victorians at Victoria Park, Victoria. Put the statue in Victoria.

Yeah Shane, the statue should be located in Victoria. Probably best at Victoria Park but even better at the MCG.

But it isn't just a Victorian footy thing, it has become a defining moment in Australian history and the whole country is the better for it. That gesture has become a huge wake up call to the rednecks that their behaviour needs to withstand scrutiny and clearly it didn't.

That said, if it is placed here, I'd be happy to point that out to my kids and tell them about the bad old days and what a hero looks like. He's a Noongar and his example might be something great for the Noongar kids growing up now.

The statue should be placed where the most people possible can see it and reflect on the why such a gesture proved to be necessary

All good points, Shane - difficult to argue against.

I think we're all pretty humbled by the man, and I don't think you could find anyone in this state that isn't proud he's from WA. It would be perhaps THE iconic statue of the game which should be front row centre at the centre of football (the MCG I guess). Should there be one at Vic Park, St Kilda's training ground or Kellerberrin (for that matter)? Or Perth's Optus Stadium? Not sure, if there was only going to be one statue i don't think it should waste away at some suburban (or country) backwater - it should confront everyone going to the game. If it was the one and only statue at the Craypot, good - make it 10x the size then.

But I'm not sure on this. I admit to feeling a bit cynical everytime I walk past the Dennis Lillee at the MCG - I reckon it should stand in front of the home of the hard fast wickets at the WACA. I respect where/what it is situated amongst, but I reckon it belongs at the WACA. But the WACA is going to start that long process of 'commerce' reclamation- Lillee would end up in front of some tawdry condo/office complex (and what would be the point in that).

Nicky's statue is just too important - to the game, this place, this continent. I just think it should be placed in the most important position that can be found. It may have occurred in front of a pack of rascist Victorian knobs, but what it stands for now is something emblematic of damn near everything wrong with the past. Like Gilly said, it was a line in the sand that changed everything - where it goes now has to be very carefully thought out.

Just my thoughts.

Victoria can celebrate their racist past their own way. If it goes up in Victoria it is just a reminder that Collingwood supporters are bilge water. I'd rather Nicky was here, and/or, everywhere.

If you go building statues because you like Nicky Winmar then it's just a decoration. The context of the event is important and it was a very Victorian moment. Victoria Park at the time was the most vile place in Australian sport. They thought that was a point of pride and the world was becoming increasingly less tolerant of that.

The reception it received was the key to it becoming an important moment. The newspaper ran with it in a big way and the public reaction was largely positive towards Winmar. The pressure of that forced Collingwood to start cleaning up their act and the AFL to take a big role in cracking down on racism in the league.

If he'd done that at Subiaco Oval he would have received a very different reaction from the supporters and the media. I doubt the photo would have made the paper. The issue would have been treated as an 'angry black man' story and the crowd would have booed him for the rest of his career. We

If you look at Adam Goodes and his war dance, years later in a different media landscape and a different Australia, you get an idea of how much influence the reaction to the event plays in it's importance.

None of that happened in WA. We weren't the catalyst or the reaction. It's not our story. It's a good story but it's not ours to tell.

We've got plenty of our own stories to tell, if we want statues we should build some statues for those.

Shane is dead right.

The statue should be made, but not erected here.

You may as well have a statue of Graham Polak headbutting a tram.

Only Taxis allowed in the stadium precinct...

Maybe Dan Kerr and an aerial?

I would argue the moment belongs to football more than Victoria. I think the statue should be at the home of football.

And the plaque describing what he did and why he did it is as important as anything and every kid passing through the ground should read it.

Winmar changed everything that day.

If you are going to put a statue up in WA Stephen Micheal, Mel Whinnen, Billy Walker, and Billy Dempsey are good subjects. They took the view that they didn't have to go to Melbourne to be superstars of Aussie footy.

I'd favour the moment of impact between Shaun McManus and David Wirrpanda. Or JLo's mark against St Kilda. Or Matthew Scarlett getting sucked in by Ballas...

Can't say I agree. The context was Aussie Rules in Australia. Specifically it points the finger at Collingwood, but other than that, well, we all know the story. Does it mean you couldn't put up a statue of John Curtin in Adelaide because he never lived there? Or, you couldn't put up a statue of Simpson and his donkey outside the coastal strip of the Dardanelles? Events like these are integral with how we like (or don't like) to see ourselves as a people, it happened to be Collingwood supporters in this instance. It doesn't mean that an indigenous boy playing for Beverley against York didn't cop a spray the same weekend, and didn't feel a sense of vindication by Winmar's actions.

What's with the Victorian cringe. The iconic Nicky Winmar incident was about racism more than football and it could have happened in WA or any state in Australia.
I think Shane is just upset because Nicky played for South's while Old East's are not keen on proposing a Kerr or Cousins statue as a perpetual reminder of disfunction and infamy.
