The day after the AFL decides to get tougher on tummy punches we see the Wildcats hitting the headlines with fans jumping out of their seats with excitement following a melee. On top of which there is a suggestion that players won’t be sanctioned!
It’s a sad day for footy when basketball becomes the more aggressive sport!
I know it isn’t very PC, and it is hard to know where to draw the line - clearly there’s no room for Barry Hall style king hits or head high tackles - but I do miss a bit of the ol’ rough stuff that tested players out and added a bit of excitement to the game.

Settle down. I know they get you basketball types all keyed up and excited, what with the Queen songs and the 90's techno but the AFL wouldn't even bother to lay a wrestling charge over that.

Melees nowadays seem to be when teams are going off the ground during a break more than actually during a game.

I agree though WTB, we rarely even see anything like that in football anymore.

Adelaide’s captain committed a bush-league hard foul in the last seconds of a blowout loss on a teenage development player playing his first game for the Wildcats. There really was no other outcome than a bit of a scuffle.

If the same thing happened to Brayshaw in his first game I have no doubt a few Freo players would have his back. Walters tried to throw a player into the crowd for roughing up Fyfe last year, so he might be inclined to throw a few if it was a rookie on the receiving end.

Morgan, from where I was sitting, it was more like a bush league cheap shot. Good to see his team mate go in and deal to the player who took a pretty gutless option. Adelaide coaching staff did themselves no credit whatsoever with their comments after the incident either, and tomorrows game should be worth watching. Has Gleeson tried to get Dale Kickett into a Wildcats singlet for the game?

History suggests the game on Sunday will suck, as the refs will call fouls on anyone who so much as breathes on their opponent. Being a Sixers home game, that will go in their favour.

But it could be worth watching in case Derek Cooke Jr straight up murders a bloke.

There's nothing like an all-inner to create team cohesion, nothing. But I reckon they don't tell you that at Harvard - intelligence wannabes have a way of avoiding simple truths.

If I was RoLy I would spend the last fortnight of the preseason hammering home the need to stand by your mates - then I would get some lackey to give some knobbers from our round 1 opponents a couple of hundred to pick a fight at the main break with Mike Walters. That in a nutshell is (what they call) an 'on-field strategy.
