TOPIC: Back 6

It would be great, really great if we can develop a really solid back 6. I'd like to see:
Johnson Hamling Logue
Ryan Pearce Wilson

With Hughes, Spurr or maybe S Hill rotating through,
Thoughts?

I think MJ is past the point of developing,
Anyway 4 talls might be too many

It’s an interesting question, I think in two years our backline looks like this:
Nihuis Hamling Ryan
Hughes Pearce Wilson
With Logue or Cox replacing Nihuis when we play against teams with 3 genuine tall forwards.
But where does that leave MJ and Spur in these transitional years?

Hard to see A Pearce getting too many games this year after virtually 2 years off.

Ive been to training and Logue looks awesome. Has been running off his man and kicking long hitting targets. Can play on smalls or talls. Alex Pearce is also looking ridiculously good and while he might need a few games at WAFL level I could see him in the team by round 4 easily.Johnson is looking a bit underdone and building fitness. Id be surprised if our back six wasnt.
B: Logue Hamling Hughes
HB: Ryan A.Perace Wilson
With Blakely and Tucker rotating there as well.

Good to hear DD. But why Tucker? He hasn't played off half back since he's been at Freo has he?

Blakely will be playing more in the backline than midfield to allow for the introduction of Andrew Brayshaw (AB) and Adam Cerra (AC). We've got a healthy mix of mids with Fyfe, Neale, S. Hill, Mundy, Walters, B. Hill, No. 2 and 5 picks, Langdon, then throw in Blakely. Fyfe and Mundy will rotate up forward. This is how it'll look in the first couple of rounds:

Back 6:

Logue ,Hamling, Tucker/Blakely
Wilson, MJ/A. Pearce, Ryan.

That's a solid back 6 or 8, our mids are capable of matching the top teams when you throw in Darcy and Sandi.

Our forward line is our achilles heel. What's the combo up there. This is how I see it

Matera, Cammac, Ballas
Mundy, Apeness/Cox, Grey

I think Blakely (got a good nick anyone? Waves?) can be a very good player and I reckon he can rip through the centre no problem. Where to start 2 and 5? Maybe outside wings or high forwards and ease them in. Or cycle through the established players till they are ready to roll And there should be a couple of other newbies in the mix early.

Is Apeness even back in full training yet? Bring on The Big Dix. Interested to see how he goes in the pre season. Could force his way in early and wouldn't take much for him to go above Apeness in the pecking order.

Roly likes Kersten and he would start in the forward line before Mundy.

Mundy & Fyfe will still spend the majority of their time in the midfield with short spells in the forward line.

Still say Tucker is no backman, plus you've forgotten how much Roly likes Spurr and how conservative he is with regards to selection early in the season.

Im not saying Tucker is a backman. Ive seen five or so training sessions this year and he has played all over the ground including defence, so I think he will be a utility who spends some time back. Meanwhile Id be very surprised if Blakely played more than 30% back. He has been dominating clearance work and looks capable of taking his game to a new level. Fyfe has also spent a lot more time training as a forward. I cant see them not wanting Fyfe to play forward more in games as he looks really dominant in that role in training. Fyfe forward more means a need to play Blaklely more onball too. While Cerra and Brayshaw both look super promising I cant see them playing too much as inside mids in their first year as they are still fairly slight and it would possibly put them at risk of collision injuries like the one Jack Martin suffered in his first game.

Id say Hughes is also close to a certainty to be in the team. His athleticism is off the charts and exactly what our team needs. Improved a heap last year and is probably our best runner in terms of a combination of speed and endurance. He is quicker than the Hill boys in sprints.

It’s hard to believe that we’ve got a youthful squad with plenty of upside. From the captain down, they are assembling some list. Is Fyfe the youngest captain in the AFL. Then throw in a triple premiership player who is 25 at best, then Walters who IMO is the best small forward in the comp at only 26, I think. Something special is brewing.
