TOPIC: In case you missed it

I would have thought, after they did it to Sylvia and Yarran, with spectacularly bad results, they might have re-evaluated their design.

Are there alternatives to punishing an adult: lunchtime detentions, yard duty, writing lines.
Time out is a way to go. It may or may not be successful. My guess is the club has set benchmarks he needs to hit before he comes back. I don't find it that weird.
The photoshopping is a bit strange, though i get the reason why.

I take your point about Sylvia and Yarran shane but it did work for SonSon. Let’s hope it works for Harley so we’re shooting 50/50.

It didn't work with Josh Simpon either.

They got lucky with Walters.

Yarran was surely a bit different. I'd have thought the "you've acted your way out and you can act your way in" mantra is quite a reasonable one, or are you arguing he hadn't done enough to act his way out?

As to having control over the media speculation, good luck with that. Ross gets a reasonably amount of vitriol from the media about his media performances already.

And happy new year everybody, looking forward to the season.

Mikey didn't go south to Mandurah, whole different ball game with the Black Ducks. I'm not inferring there's anything wrong with the coaching/support at Peel but it looks like a one-way ticket to me. Stupid move by Cockburn Control.

But if there's an open chair in the team photo check your posters when they come out - anyone can be photoshopped in.

I'm glad they put the spare chair in the team photo because I can't possibly see how they would be able to photoshop Harley in without the chair being there.

With all this brouhaha I got to read a few HB articles I hadn't before, paraphrasing one I read which related when Harley was being shown the door by Gold Coast , with him saying "...that he never thought it would get to this...' to which a senior GC official replied, "...that's the problem Harley."

Unfortunately I think we are still in this space.

The Gold Coast are a bit sanctimonious for a club that put a kid from Pinjarra and lodged him with a senior player who was later to be charged for supplying players with cocaine.

Some players don’t get it. Clubs do theirbest they want them on the park.
Remember Fevola, Stremple, Bootsma, Gartlett plenty of others mostly announced quietly by the club before they have shown any of their talent. Plus all those players each year delisted that we can’t understand didn’t get another shot.

Bastards sent Harley to Peel without his chair to sit on, cunning rehab program by the conditioning staff that has gone completely under the radar.

If he was really in trouble they would have taken away his IPAD and Screens and sent him up to see Polly about helping out feeding the Sheep for two weeks in the double gee paddock without his boots.

They wouldn't dare send him to Polly. The two of them would spend all their time hanging around car parks having a lungbuster.

Getting back to reality here, there seems to be disconnect between what an employer can rightly do and what they can't.

It has been mentioned by some that HB might have a problem with alcohol. Well, not being an illegal substance, an employer can offer support and set work standards. They cannot forcibly go much further. Comparisons between HB and Cousins are also crazy as Cousins wasn't using legal substances....thats whole different ball game.

HB's crime as far as his employer goes is he missed a required work attendance ie training. His other activities are outside any employers control.

I'm not sure that exclusion is an effective form of support though. Sending Walters back to Swans is hailed as a success but was that due the Freo, Walters or work put by Swans? or Nicnats magic SMS.

Leaving Bennell out of the team photo says you are not part of the team. Leaving him at the club says the opposite. Discipline does not have to be banishment especially if you are trying to forge a team spirit. Banishment works against that for everybody not just the miscreant.

The club needs to remember what the major objective is here.....and unless that major objective is forcing HB out then they are not using the best approach for the whole club. That would involve discipline inside the club like game suspensions.

One thing is clear, Lyon doesn't learn from previous mistakes. Failure might be feedback but if you ignore that feedback then failure is just failure.

In other news it was great to see S Yarran has been picked up to play WAFL, shame it has to be with Subi (Polly must of been out of the car park when that deal went down?)

Regarding HB, I remember a certain 25yo club leader a few years back in 2010 who was also being naughty and banned from the leadership group, suspended from playing and training at the club for 5 weeks during the season. He was put through programs to address his behaviour and redeem himself to the team. I recon he has turned out alright, albeit we need to explain the meaning of "turn the other cheek" properly to him when out in Perth Night spots.

HB Banned from training he is, but the carrot of playing games is right there for him. Nothing to see here, standard proportional response used by many clubs to fire a shot across the bow, not just by us. What is missing here is the communication of the between the lines stuff of what is being done to help him aka community Alcohol programs to help him get out of his binging habits, senior player mentoring, +/- help with dealing with the stress of the last two years. I'd be very disappointed if this was not being addressed.

Truth of the matter is, he is not turning it on every two weeks and creating headlines. All reports suggest he puts high expectations on himself, is very focused and professional most of the time and keeps his head down. But like all of us he needs to find a way of letting off some steam that is acceptable to his chosen career.

I understand the Boss getting ticked at him not showing up to work, as do most bosses. He is still at work down at Peel it is not like he has been fired, the Boss has just got him shovelling the muck in the Stables. Move on people, he'll be back and hopefully making highlight reels like there is no tomorrow.

Crap decision by the club about the Photo shopping exercise. That should of been kept within house and not made public. Whoever made that decision should be made to go and spend 8 weeks over with the OOFTITs or helping Polly feed sheep in the double gee paddock
