No-one took number 14? I told you my jumper is cursed.

Unless I have missed something it doesn't appear that Matera or Wilson have been allocated jumpers yet. Quite possible that 3 and 14 have been held aside for these two senior players.

There's a loud and powerful message being sent by holding off the No.29 until season 2019. Sounds like the player will likely be a very special one.

Yeah, nah. It's only halfway through the rebuild. They don't want to set some sort of expectations from the supporters by handing out Pav's jumper. People might get the wrong idea about how hard they're trying to win games.

I'm crystal balling here but it could coincide with the return of Demo 1. It'd be a fitting welcome to the recipient of the No. 29.

McManus? Come off it.

Suban wore number 8 for nine seasons, until a month ago. Show him a bit of respect.

Not cursed at all! Stoked about Grover passing on the 14 to Wilson. I still remember very fondly when I asked Grover to sign my number 14 jumper and he was quite incredulous, saying: "Wouldn't be many of these floating around, mate!"

Just by chance I shared some donuts and a coffee with Grover's Mum and Aunty on Elizabeth Street (Melbourne) once - great chat (but I won't go into it here). But Grover's dakking of Jonno Brown has to be one of the defining moments in the history of footy, I'll never forget it.

Regarding Pav's #29 they should just hand it out to any kid. As much as most supporters share an empathy about past players and their numbers, the club don't (and never has). Don't be fooled by their newfound 'legacy' baloney - it's a Steve hoodwink move.

Who did they give Purple Jesus' #33 to?
[HONK] - incorrect, it was Ben Bucovaz before Cam Sutcliffe.

Who was given Dale Kickett and Des Headland's #11 to?
[WAIT - didn't Mike Walters ask for it?]
[DING - CORRECT, right after Des retired]
um...
[DING] - correct, Tommy Sheridan (a year later)

Now ask yourself, where are the like-for-like comparisons? It may be possible that the club had some about face on this, but I doubt it. It's just Steve baloney - hand out Pav's old number and be done with it. Or, stand up and tell everyone why Mikey was refused and why Dale's legacy means nothing to Fremantle.

I'm with you Polly. Either it's just a number on your back, or it's a tradition and something passed down. I can't be either or both, depending on which media statement you feel like releasing that day.

I reckon if you play enough games to get life membership at the club, you should get to choose who gets your number when you retire. I like the idea of making young rookies asking retired veterans for permission to wear the jumper, or club legends calling up some young kid and saying 'I like the way you go about it, and it would make me happy to see you in this jumper'.

Just looking at that photo, Bailey Banfield is a big dude. Or maybe the camera angle is deceptive.
