TOPIC: Academy pick

Hi. Can someone explain how the academy picks worked on Friday. At one stage we picked a Brisbane academy player in the draft. Brisbane "matched" our offer (whatever that means) and got the guy we wanted as that pick and we got the next one. I'm confused...looks like all that happened is we helped Bribane queue jump. Some clarity would be appreciated

Speaking of that, what happened with that young Jason Carter from our academy that we were supposedly picking up? Can he be chosen in the rookie draft?

As I understand it, academy picks work like father son pick ups. The system is designed to help players go to the team that helped develop them. If another club tries to pick up your academy player before you’ve selected him then you can opt to jump in at that point but you have to pay enough draft points to match the pick that the other club used to select him.
But I could be, and am often, wrong.

From my limited knowledge, the academy picks are based on a point system. The scenario that unfolded on draft night, forced Brisbane to match Freo's selection by utilizing their remaining picks, in this case their pick after Freo to snare Connor Bellenden. Each pick in the draft has points allocation attached to them.

In next year's draft, we get a free hit with Jason Carter, and should an opposition selects him before we do, we'll be able to match the offer if we wished to. My gut feel is that he'll be a second round pick, and while not having one next year, a combination of draft picks in other rounds would seal the deal. Or we somehow trade back into the second round.

Happy to stand corrected and get other views on this issue.

Jason carter is probably why Freo felt confident in trading away our picks for next year - they’re just planning on matching points with a series of lower picks and calling Jase our pick up for the year.

Next year has already been touted as the superdraft. Our stockpile this year resembles 2008, when we picked up Ballas, Walters etc. Then the following year, that number dropped. We were heavily invested in the rookie and preseason draft during the 08-09 period due to the compromised drafts which delivered shed load of talent to GWS and the Suns. Not sure how many spots left on the list, but tomorrow's rookie draft could be an anticlimax. It makes sense that our round 1 and Carter in 2018, are priorities, the remainder just steak knives.

As I understand it, we only have our 1st round pick next year , we traded away our 2nd, 3rd and 4th round picks, where back in after that.

It works like this:

(i) Every pick is allocated a number of points according to a statistical regression based on average salaries for the pick, eg
1 — 3000
2 — 2517
3 — 2234
4 — 2034
5 — 1878
...
10 — 1395
...
20 — 912
...
30 — 629
etc

(ii) You have an academy or a father son claim on a player and that player is selected by someone else before your next pick you can get the player but you have to pay the points difference between the your pick and where the player is picked by another team. The value of the claimed player is discounted by 20% to you so you don't have to make the full points difference.

(iii) You can make up the points with multiple later picks. This is why it's good to have a bunch of late picks if you are going for academy players. It's like having a few Bradmans stashed in the kitchen drawer to swing a purchase.

(iii) The small change is made up by shuffling later picks down the list.

(iv) Beyond pick 55 you can just get the player with your pick for the round, you don't have to make up any difference. And with the 20% discount, the difference will be around about nothing anyway, maybe positive. This is equivalent to the old father-son system.

Example: In the 2034 draft we have pick 5 but our father-son target, Titan Waterhouse, is picked by the slime at pick 2. Pick 2 is worth 2517, which discounted by 20% is 2013 points which is what we have to pony up. We can use pick 5 (1879 points) and need an additional (2013-1897=) 116 points. We have pick 64 (101 points). We now need an additional 15 points. We get this by downgrading our pick 48 to pick 49 (15 points difference.) Whoever had 49 gets a one position earlier pick. We get Waterhouse. The slime pick again with their pick 2.

That example assumes that football is still played in 2034.

This system was basically designed to keep academy and father-son picks but to stop the process being used to scam a top draftee with an end of first round pick. Like when the Swans got Heeney with pick 18, and Essendon got Danniher with pick 10. Both these guys would have gone very early. You still get the player at a discount, but not for peanuts.

Do you think it's time for an editor to take stock when someone would rather proclaim that they were randomly Googling 'Clive Waterhouse children' rather than have people think they are a reader of their paper.
