Reading the forums on this and some other sites , I can't understand why Lee is so maligned , I rate him as a very steady and reliable defender , Am i missing something?

Lee Spurr has been a terribly courageous and dependable defender, especially during our best days in 2013/14. We always struggled against the small very quick forwards like Rioli and Lees lack of pace meant he needs a helping hand at times. Injuries, age, lack of speed, poor disposal and form issues last year have contributed to some people bagging him. To me, he deserved to be in the leadership group but this season will be a challenge for him to regain his top form and maintain a spot in the side. And thats a good thing if we have bona fide challengers for his position, which we now do.

Pav, I don't think Spurr is maligned on D/L, he is however the player who is (rightfully) pointed out as being under the gun from the next generation of defenders. His best assets are his ability to play tall or small and his strength in the air.
His worst, his disposal and a lack of real pace, that stopped him becoming an elite defender.

I think he has done a tremendous job in getting the best out of his strengths and minimizing the downside of his skills, but he is now in that stage of his career where he will be the spare parts man. Freo can not afford to have Spurr and Johnno in the same side these days, so when Johnno signed for another year it made Spurr's spot in the team a lot harder to hold.

Maligned?
It is just that his best days are behind him.
He was a reliable defender when Johnno, Mc pharlane, Duffield where there to help him out.
But in our current defence his lack of pace, disposal etc he is a liability.
Time to give Ryan, Williams , ed Langdon etc a go now.

Spurr is much loved...never gives in, hard as a cat's head, complete team man. When our whole of team defence was at its best the lack of pace in Spurr or Sutcliffe or Johnno was compensated by this manic approach. But we now need a more explosive exit option from defence hence the Wilson/ Ryan/ Hughes develooment. Not maligned...just a realisation of what is needed to progress.
