TOPIC: De Boer

A fringe player whilst we kept giving games to Sutcliffe, Sheridan and D.Pearce. Wonder why GWS weren't interested in them instead of De Boer?
157 games played now and another two year contract. Done okay for a jam tin kicker.

R.Lyon,

you may be right but I don't entirely agree. I do find it hard to justify getting rid of Barlow and De Boer while keeping Pearce at Peel.

If you can explain that logic, you have a career at list management

Pearce had a contract, de Boer and Barlow didn't.

Pearce got his contract extension while we were riding high and I guess they were more inclined to being extravagant (plus Pearce's role was more a rarer commodity on our list).

Unfortunately, when Barlow and de Boer were up for renewal it was a much harsher lens being applied.

If you think we are in the running for a premiership within a year or two you are correct in claiming we should have retained Da Pig. You are also IMHO deluded. Bleed on.

He was a great pickup for a team awash with talent but lacking experience and intestinal fortitude, who should be challenging for the top. For Freo, in rebuild for the next few years, he represents a loss of a player position that could go to a younger player with more upside.

Some of you need to consider whether we should be scrambling to win any games we can or developing a team that can to have a go at the big one. Take your pick. Sentimentality won't get a premiership cup. it may involve sacrificing a few holy cows and maybe a holy pig.

jimb2,

we are not in the running for a tilt at the flag this year or next year for that matter. Our club can't evemn make uup its mind whether we have completed 2 or 3 years of out 5 year rebuild. I suspect we'll be told its the first year of our rebuild.....again.

That aside, players like De Boer and Barlow were not well utilised by the coaching staff. They also have a lot to offer in developing the younger players. A darn sight more than Pearce does, especially since he spends most of this time at Peel. I feel the same way about Sutcliffe.

Sentimentality won't win many games, that is certainly true. Getting rid of guys who can mentor and support developing players won't win many games either.

Hanging on to blokes when they are playing at Peel won't win many games. Clearly Barlow and De Boer have things to offer and equally clearly Pearce and Sutcliffe offer much less. So the criticism is valid whether people like it or not

I can't see anything wrong with rebuilding a team and winning some games. Lots of upside with membership/game day attendance, it might also instil a winning culture at a club.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought we drated Matty as a rookie selection. Therefore the club wasn't too sure what he was capable of. Then he was upgraded onto the senior list during Harvey's time - heaved when RoLy couldn't spin anymore excuses that anyone would buy into.

I'm glad he's got another couple of years in footy - lots of upside in that too (plus he won't have to slug his heart out for nothing anymore).

All this talk of how he is a better fit for GWS and gives them more value than he would give us is well and good. But doesn't that mean we should have got something for him?

When somebody really needs something I've just got lying around, then unless they're a good mate or a charity case I'm going to look for some quid pro quo.

Anyhoo, all the best Dutchy. 'Twas a pleasure.

GWS probably would not have taken him if there was a price attached, but they took the risk as a free pick. What is wrong with Freo giving these players the opportunity to continue their careers.

Freo would be a better team with Matt DeBoer in it. And no closer or further away from a premiership than without him.

I've said it before, but GWS are a bunch of front-running show ponies who have always been the best players at their age. You need a bit of grunt from a bloke who worked his way up from the rookie list to show them how to make the most of your ability and put your head over the ball when things aren't going well. He's a perfect fit for them.

We need some quality, particularly in disposal and in kicking goals. He's not going to give us that. Our players can learn the craft of playing footy from blokes like Walters and Neale, who also were rough gems, but who are also A-grade footy players.

Besides, below is AFL.com.au's guess at Freo's best 22 next year. I haven't interrogated it too closely, but which of these blokes would you boot for de Boer? Add two top 5 picks (likely midfielders) and blokes like Tucker, Kersten and Grey out of the team - as well as whipping boys Sheridan and the unfairly maligned Sutcliffe - and I'm not sure there is much benefit in him being on Freo's list.

He's better off with GWS until he comes back to coach Claremont to a few premierships before jumping to Freo as an assistant to Pav.

Good on him.

B: Griffin Logue, Joel Hamling, Lee Spurr
HB: Nathan Wilson, Michael Johnson, Luke Ryan
C: Stephen Hill, Connor Blakely, Bradley Hill
HF: Michael Walters, Brennan Cox, Harley Bennell
F: Hayden Ballantyne, Cam McCarthy, Brandon Matera
R: Aaron Sandilands, Nat Fyfe, Lachie Neale
INT: David Mundy, Sean Darcy, Ed Langdon, Ethan Hughes

Pav will never coach. He's already said so. But Mzungu will need a top-quality senior assistant.

He'll make more as a merchant banker than a coach. That's part of what Sydney offers. He's doing some job part-time with some company in the finance world, isn't he?

Brandon Matera and Ed Langdon stand out on that list.

And when the inevitable quality medically-managed 2-3 week disease hits the likes of David Mundy, Lachie Neale, Michael Walters, Lee Spurr and (with gritted teeth) Hayden Ballantyne, a bloke of Deboer’s quality - not wasting away at Peel but dominating with 35 disposals, 137 tackles and a couple of goals - who can step in and more than cut it in the heat of the kitchen has...well...value.
