Pav353, my point is if the only year that a team is capable of winning a GF is by avoiding all the good teams then the winning the GF is a contrived result and therefore the competition is really a Mickey Mouse affair. Will the 2017 Tigers team and the 2016 Bulldogs team ever be talked about amongst the great Brisbane, Geelong or Hawthorn teams. Probably not.

As far as we play this team once and this team twice, its just filling up column inches out of season. The fact that the fixture has to be analysed like that says the competition is rigged and therefore the result is the same as a North Korean election.

Do North Korea have elections? Look it is what it is , It has some positives and negatives , As Shane says it is mathematically more probable for a bottom 10 side to play a top 8 side because there is 8 not 7 , But the bottom 4 suns , N.M Carlton and Brisbane all came away with only 9 games against last years top 8 .But we can not do anything about it . The other thing yet to be established is who is set to improve and who is set to fall, One of our double ups and top 8 sides i believe is set to fall , No prizes for guessing who?

Well according to Champion data and the formula they used, FFC have been dealt with the toughest draw in 2018. Makes it a challenge in anyone's language but that hasn't dented my optimism.

Hardest 2017 Ladder Finish

1 Fremantle 14th
2 Richmond 1st
3 West Coast 6th
4 Hawthorn 12th
5 St Kilda 11th
6 GWS 4th
7 Melbourne 9th
8 Adelaide 2nd
9 Western Bulldogs 10th
10 Essendon 8th
11 Carlton 16th
12 Brisbane 18th
13 Geelong 3rd
14 Sydney 5th
15 Port Adelaide 7th
16 Gold Coast 17th
17 North Melbourne 15th
18 Collingwood 13th
* Draw difficulty as assessed by Champion Data

Personally I think these predictions are pointless. Nobody can accurately predict where a team will finish and who you would be better off playing or not.

Take for example the same thing this time last year. If you thought you were to get Richmond or Essendon twice you would have been very happy judging on their 2016 efforts. No-one saw Richmond going all the way and even though Essendon would do better no-one expected them to make the finals. You probably would also have been happy to get Port twice also judging by their 2016 efforts.

On the other hand you would have been more worried getting Hawthorn or North twice even though they were expected to fall down the ladder, but not to the extent they did. Same for WB.

Other teams you would think would be pleased to play us twice but if we are going to improve you do it against whoever you have to, you can't always rely on what some perceive as an easy draw.

What you say is correct CA, and would be a valid argument in a random draw of the fixtures. HOWEVER, the AwFL state that the draw, due to the addition of a "partial 2nd round" (which is very impartial), has been weighted so no sides gain an unfair advantage or disadvantage. We seem to be among the most disadvantaged sides most years, whether at the top or bottom of the previous years draw.

So the AFL say the draw is weighted to reflect each team's finishing position the year before. Specifically (they say):

Bottom six: Clubs ranked 13-18 on the 2015 ladder will have either no return meeting or a maximum of one return meeting with clubs ranked 1-6. They will have a minimum of one or a maximum of two return meetings with clubs ranked 7-12. They will have a minimum of two and a maximum of three return meetings with other bottom six clubs.

So how do we do? We play WCE, Port, Essendon, Carlton and Collingwood twice. That's one team ( Port) in the top six, two teams (WCE and Collingwood) in the mid-six, and two teams (Collingwood and Carlton) in the bottom six.

In other words, our draw is perfectly fair. Add our bonus home game against the Suns and we've got nothing to complain about.

We're also getting a good run of the Big Melbourne Clubs at the new stadium - Essendon, Hawks, Carlton, Collingwood - which will keep our bean counters happy and (maybe) the umpiring execution squad quiet.

Slime finishing in the top 6 may have done us a favour. You would hope our Derby losses in 2018 are a thing of the past. We'll start our run of domination. The wins will start to add up. The fact that we play GWS, Sydney and Geelong once while away is a plus. Remember we didn't do to badly against both Cats and GWS at their grounds last time.

but we lost both games , So anything within a few goals is o.k?
The biggest positive in this years draw is we do not play a genuine top 6 side twice , Wet toast finished 8th and stole their first final .

From the HS:
WEST Coast and Brisbane claim a secret plan they hatched to play a Lions home game at the new Perth Stadium was pinched by the AFL
Instead Gold Coast will host Fremantle in Perth which will cost the Lions $1 million and the Eagles a bonus home game.
They are angry their arch-rivals — the AFL-controlled Suns and the Dockers — will now get to cash in on their radical fixture concept.

They'd try anything to get an advantage. I only wished that we'd play GC twice both at home.

It's not a bad draw after all.

I don’t know that the draw could have been much tougher given our ladder position this year, that is if a teams performance this year plays out next year, which is the only yardstick that can be applied.
I can’t share your unbounded optimism for our success next year Jezza. I think we are on the right track, but I am concerned that the year could start poorly and with a young list still developing could be a long year.
If this is how it plays out I can only imagine how this site will explode. I hope the club then has the fortitude to stay the course they have set out for better or worse.
Given the draw though if we were to have a winning year could set the base for a bright future.

You missed a few emotive words from the print version of that wonderful pice of "journalism" by Sam Landsberger in today's West, Jezza.

Headline: How AFL shafted Eagles

West Coast and Brisbane claim a secret plan they hatched to play a Lions home game at the new Perth Stadium was pinched by the AFL
Instead Gold Coast will host
fellow strugglers Fremantle in Perth which will cost the Lions $1 million and the Eagles a bonus home match.
Both clubs are angry their arch-rivals — the AFL-controlled Suns and the Dockers — will now get to cash in on their radical fixture concept.

...It was decided the Dockers were a "better outcome from a fixturing point of view", rather than the Eagles, who completed all the groundwork.
Brisbane and West Coast took their proposal to the AFL this year and were confused to learn in grand final week that they had been shafted.

They deserve it for pinching someone else’s logo. I suppose they come up with Christmas and Easter as well.
Not as big a bonus as it looks given we would probably have beaten Gold Coast at home anyway

The Eagles plan was to buck the system to get an extra home game , would they not think they can beat Brissy away anyway? The gold coast situation is different they literally have no home ground that week so by mutual agreement they play away.
One was being cheeky the other is just by necessity
