TOPIC: Crystal Ball

The Fox Sports website has the following line-up as Freo's "best 22" for next year. I have made a few comments and would be interested to see what others think.

FREMANTLE
B: Alex Pearce, Joel Hamling, Lee Spurr
HB: Nathan Wilson, Michael Johnson, Luke Ryan
C: David Mundy, Lachie Neale, Bradley Hill
HF: Connor Blakely, Brennan Cox, Stephen Hill
F: Brandon Matera, Cam McCarthy, Harley Bennell
R: Aaron Sandilands, Nat Fyfe, Michael Walters
I/C: Sean Darcy, Ethan Hughes, Darcy Tucker, Tommy Sheridan
EMG: Shane Kersten, Griffin Logue, Ed Langdon

(Fox Sport also said): This is a tough line-up to put together, especially with so many young midfielders yet to prove themselves consistently at senior level. However recent recruit Nathan Wilson, who arrives from GWS, is a certainty on a half-back flank, with his ability to drive, rebound and gain metre-age is exactly what the Dockers need. Former Sun Brandon Matera also slots into a forward pocket — and ahead of veteran Hayden Ballantyne. And we shouldn’t forget gun tall defender Alex Pearce, who missed most of 2017 due to injury but is one of the most promising key backmen in the game. Also, either or both of the young guns Freo chooses with Picks 2 and 5 would be in contention for an early start.

My Question Marks are:
1. How quickly might Alex Pearce return to good enough form to warrant a place in the best 22?
2. Will Michael Johnson’s body permit him to play out the season?
3. Is Brennan Cox better suited to a back-line position, with Matt Taberner playing as a key forward?
4. Is Tom Sheridan (or Cameron Sutcliffe for that matter) part of Freo’s team that will play in future finals’ series? I would prefer playing time be given to Logue and Langdon to promote their development.
5. Is Brandon Matera a ready and viable replacement for Hayden Ballantyne, or will Ballantyne return to something like his All-Australian form of a few years ago after an injury-free pre-season. After all, Ross the Boss has declared his love for Ballantyne. If he is fit and playing well, I would prefer him to Matera in the best 22. The ball is in Ballas’ court.
The quality/readiness of Freo’s depth players available is not that hot. If you look at the other players on the list, but not in the “best 22” above, who are:
• Backs: Taylin Duman, Griffin Logue, Ryan Nyhuis, & Cameron Sutcliffe
• Midfield: Brady Grey, Ed Langdon, & Danyle Pearce
• Forward: Michael Apeness, Hayden Ballantyne, Shane Kersten, & Matt Taberner
• Ruck: Luke Strnadica
So, what does the draft lottery hold for Freo?
From the depth list, it is plain to see that the 11 or 12 draftees (including Rookies) will need to add more depth to all the positions on the field.

And that is not to say that Freo will ignore any of the delisted or free agents available. I think Billy Hartung (ex-Hawthorn), and Ben Lennon (ex-Richmond) are young enough to warrant consideration.

What do others think?

The depth list is a little thin on rucks, but you’ve 2 rucks in the list. Overall, 4 tall backmen on the field, and some good depth in mids and key forwards. So the list doesnt go very deep but there’s ok cover across the board. I reckon it leaves us in a good position to take best available with maybe a goal to get a ruckman somewhere (Sandi, Darcy, Strndca is a bit thin on rucks - I don’t consider Cox and Tabs serious ruckmen).

Injuries aside there will be a lot of pressure for slots and pick 2 and 5 you would think will be playing before the season is over.

And MJ 211 Spurr and perhaps Mundy might not be playing at years end.

Sheridan ahead of Logue and Hughes? Ridiculous.

RideoftheVagaries
Having Johnson there provides credible resting cover options in the ruck, giving a bit of leeway for playing one ruckman and a bit of flexibility pacing Sandi's season and Darcy's development and growth (plus I like what it does for Humphrey's game). Having a journeyman or state league ruckman on the rookie list for injury coverage would be wise though.

Sheridan ahead of Logue, Langdon and Hughes is ridiculous, Suker.

Eventually Crystal Ball 6 years 5 months ago #8

Eventually
If none of the young ruckmen are available to us in the latter picks we should look at drafting Spencer for cover. Also think that Lennon and Brand could be useful late picks to add depth. Hartung's disposal and decision making is what we are trying to get rid of although not sure why Sheridan & Sutcliffe were retained in that regard!

IMHO the afl.com guys got the team a lot closer to our round 1 team.....

"B: Griffin Logue, Joel Hamling, Lee Spurr
HB: Nathan Wilson, Michael Johnson, Luke Ryan
C: Stephen Hill, Connor Blakely, Bradley Hill
HF: Michael Walters, Brennan Cox, Harley Bennell
F: Hayden Ballantyne, Cam McCarthy, Brandon Matera
R: Aaron Sandilands, Nat Fyfe, Lachie Neale
INT: David Mundy, Sean Darcy, Ed Langdon, Ethan Hughes

NOTES: Trade acquisitions Nathan Wilson and Brandon Matera slot straight into the best 22. Damaging half-back Wilson is essentially a like-for-like replacement for Lachie Weller, while Matera could help release Walters and Bennell further up the ground. The Dockers' ruck situation is intriguing. Will Darcy be the No.1, and can he and Sandilands play in the same team? Smaller, high-pressure forward lines are all the rage but talls Kersten, Taberner and, hopefully, injury-plagued Apeness should be pushing for spots. Alex Pearce appears Freo's long-term centre half-back but how he returns from nearly two years on the sidelines remains to be seen.

REMAINING SENIOR LIST: Michael Apeness, Brady Grey, Shane Kersten, Alex Pearce, Danyle Pearce, Tommy Sheridan, Nick Suban, Cam Sutcliffe, Matt Taberner, Darcy Tucker

REMAINING ROOKIE LIST: Taylin Duman, Ryan Nyhuis, Luke Strnadica - Travis King"

Clearly Nick has gone since this was written. I think their notes are closer to how it will play out as well with Alex Pearce likely to replace MJ as the year progresses and he gets back to his pre-injury form. I don't think we can play MJ, Hamling & Pearce in the same back line as it makes us too tall.

I'd also note that Nyhuis is the like for like replacement for Spurr and would expect to see him get more opportunity in 2018.

it is interesting that both have Sean Darcy & Sandi in the starting 22, although this may disrupt team balance I think it is absolutely necessary to fast track his development, dominating at WAFL level is not going to be enough if he is going to be our lone ruckman in 2019.

I also think Tabs gets the nod over Cox at this stage at CHF, while long term Cox replaces Logue as the third tall defender when he moves into more of a midfield/wing role.

Can't see both Sandi and Darcy in same team, unless they both spend a fair amount of time up forward. Not sure that has ever worked well for us anyhow. The odd goal by a resting ruck but not consistently. Sandi, if 100%, should be first pick...but pressure on him with Darcy in the wings. But Johnno and Spurr should be under pressure and any lapses by either should be checked quickly with youth ready to play. No guarantees for old favourites.

I would prefer to see Darcy in a forward pocket ahead of Matera. He has not had the luxury of operating in a team with another ruckman, he is very good at ground level for a big ruckman, and it would be worth seeing if he can consistently kick goals.
