TOPIC: Logue

“Shirked” is a harsh word
His trepidation early seemed to be more about fear of stuffing up than fear of being hurt.
But as I say, he looks to be past that now and he’s going from strength to strength

Totally sold on Logue now. Hes young, lightning quick.. and not just quick for his size and a very good kick. The confidence he gained in playing that year in the AFL was apparent when he went back and comfortably won his position in the WAFL GF.
He`s still kicking sideways but that is purely lack of confidence and when he sees Ryan and Wilson penetrating long and taking the right options he should improve rapidly.
I totally agree with the F Troop Corporal: Logue will play midfield for sure and will be devastating. Even though I backed Bizkits overall trade philosophy last year, Logue in my opinion will turn out to be better than SPS, or at least more valuable, due to his size. Hes already better than Mundy in his first year who was an absolute snail paced slug and who went on to be elite. One of our best trades I think equal to our find of the decade in Luke Ryan.

For someone who needs to learn a bit more about footy, and get confidence in how and when to attack the footy, the backline is the fast track. Putting Logue forward or even in the midfield while he is still developing is the wrong move, even when we are 15 goals down. For a start the ball will be nowhere near him for long periods of the game. If I recall correctly, he was shifted forward and Kersten went back, and it may have been a move to find out more about Kersten.

Logue played forward in two games, against the Roos, where his ability to play the mystical "swingman" role looked quite promising (kicking 1.3), and then against the WC (0.0). He got dropped in the wake of the Derby. When he came back about 7 games later he got to play in the backline, where he looked a lot more assured and decisive with his attack on the ball.

Logue is still pretty green compared to most draftees in terms of experience at a junior level, so I'd agree with the school of thought that has him building his feel for the game by seeing it unfold in front of him from the backline and if he gets a little lost from time to time, he can simplify his focus to just destroying the opposition play.

On the original point regarding phantom drafts and ratings players against where they "should" be taken. Picks aren't hard currency and still have a large degree of speculation about them, so it's not that useful to get too hung up on where a player is perceived now. Especially as players shift quite radically within a 12-18 month period. About 12 months ago Fogarty was being touted as a prospective #1 pick by many and 18 months ago this was going to be a super draft.

There are some players who benefit from playing in the backline where most of the play is ahead of them. Logue strikes me as one of those. Run at the ball, try to grab it, if you do get it go for a bit or a run a whomp it forward. For someone so athletically gifted, there is merit in keeping the game simple for him - at least for the first few years.

I think out best backline for the next few years looks something like:

FB: Ryan Hamling Spurr
HB: Logue A Pearce/Cox Wilson

That's a very strong looking backline with lots of intercept marking, some lockdown defenders a little bit of experience but also lots of improvement in it. To me, Logue's dash back there is very important.

No room for Johnno or Hughes? That's where we differ. I think Hughes had a great season. He can play tall or small(Shane Parkerish) and at this stage is better back there than Logue imo.
That's why I'd like to see Logue given a run on the ball or up forward , bust open a few packs and just see how he goes elsewhere. Similar size to McCarthy and Kersten but certainly has that bit of toughness and unpredictability that might have opposition looking around.
We're sure to have injuries so he could end up back in the backline anyway.

I rate Logue. Good long kick when he wants, and most likely to get to a contest to mark, spoil or tackle. Will be a rebounding weapon in seasons to come.

I love Johnno, and there's a good chance he's still in our best 22 next season when fit, but I was thinking of a team for the next couple of years. If we fall out of finals contention at some point next year, I would imagine Johnno would make way. In the same vein you could leave out Spurr, but I think for a youngish team he'd effectively be the captain of the backline in Johnno's absence.

I'm still not sure about Hughes. I love his attack on the ball and he's got great physical tools. His disposal worries me - less so the mechanics but more the decision-making. In that regard he reminds me a bit of Ibbo. In a settled team and a clearly defined role Hughes could be very good, but I'm not sure he's the most composed footballer going around. Obviously you could say the same about Logue, but the difference is that at the start of next season Logue will be 19 and Hughes 23. I'd imagine there's a lot more upside in The Lounge.

Plus, we need at least one bloke with curly hair down there.

I'd play Hughes, but not necessarily in defence. He is a very good mark and I think in a season or two we are going to get very used to him being a safe player to kick it to.

RR, the "Very Good Mark" bit is why I would play him in the backline. Spurr has, like Johnno, over the last season and a half, started to feel the effects of the physical battering his style of game brings with it. I would be inclined to use both as cover to rest the young defenders when they need a break. Playing them at Peel will accelerate the development of our young players there as well.

As far as backline "captains" go, Hamling and Ryan strike me as the likely generals back there and I would go for Hughes at the start of the year instead of Spurr.

I reckon we might see Taylin Dumin and Ryan Nyhuis feature in the backline next season. Spurr has been fantastic as a mature age recruit, and with Wilson coming in, First Johnno may also be making his last handful of appearances in purple. Logue looks good and was getting better and better by season's end.

Hughes still fits in the back-line described as there are 4 on the bench and you do need to rotate.

My out of left field suggestion is to throw MJ up forward. he has proved to be a great forward player when needed and a great kick at goal. hes 194 0r 195 so if the back-line is settled playing him up forward next year might solve a few problems.

Spurr and Johnno are by far our slowest players in the back half. Great as spares and mentors but no way auto first picked any more and should not be in our starting back line round one. REBUILD!!!!!!
