TOPIC: Shape of the Market

I don't think either Hayes or Allen are relevant to our pick Corporal but that's not to say they won't be handy players.

Hayes is the best young ruckman around but he hasn't really impressed me much this year while putting in some quieter performances. I can't say I've watched him enough in games to really comment why, I've only seen his U18 championship games and he wasn't overly noticeable so I didn't bother following much else of him. He seemed to have decent skills with the ball and plenty of height but doesn't always use it well. That will probably come with time and development but ruckman are hard to pick at that age. You have to be pretty special to go early as a ruckman and I don't think he is. A side desperate for a young ruck may pick him up around the late teens/early twenties.

Allen will probably go around the same point as he just isn't tall enough to be an out and out KPF. He'd be a mobile 3rd tall at 191cm (which we seem to have an abundance of) who is pretty good overhead and a good shot for goal. He thinks things through very well and knows where to be to get on the end of the footy. I do like the look of him and if we had a pick in the 20's I'd consider him although with McCarthy and Kersten already in the role he probably wouldn't get a game for a long while.

I'm hopeful one of Carlton or North pick up Dow as I think he's being overrated based on some good recent performances and I'd prefer others.
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

I agree Jezza, Im sort of hoping now we just go for two of the top 5 midfielders and maybe leave Brander out of it.
From Bizs write up, its almost like they are all good in their own way. So the real question is not, who is slightly better than the other guy but "who is most likely to stay at Freo long term ie 10 years plus". The only disaster out of this, other than an injury, is Freo developing a young star only for them to go home to Vic in three years.
My spider senses started tingling when I heard Rayner say something like "of course you`d like to stay in Melbourne but at this stage Im just happy to go anywhere to start my AFL carreer."
Biz, how about a ranking of who would be most likely to stay 10 years in WA. I know its an impossible task but I didnt know Stephenson was a Lion fan. Heard Brander was a MethToaster too.

Allen is 193cm now he has grown 2cm lately and is still growing. Also he has Ben Brown arms (very long).
Its tipped he will get picked up by Richmond.

I thought Hayes was more of a ruckman/forward similar to someone like Lobb or Tippet ( a few years back)Biz, so liked the idea of drafting him as Darcy's partner and Sandi's replacement.
He would get a great mentor in Sandi who of course is often injured and can't have long left. Darcy is more in the Sandi mould and we've never really had a ruckman that can go forward and kick goals.
We've got Strnadica who was actually a forward that we are trying to make into a ruckman but he wasn't all that convincing even when playing for Peel reserves.
I understand that a ruckman never goes early in the draft but was perhaps hoping that he might drop down enough for us to take him later. Actually i can't even remember what our next pick is after #5.

CA, I can see nothing wrong with taking Hayes at 5. He looks to be what we need, and as you say is a Lobb type of player. All the recruiting geniuses that would be on D/L were saying we should throw the chequebook at Lobb, so why not draft the Lobb MK IV version for a lot less $$$. And no I would not take the risk that Hayes will be available at pick 40ish, we got away with that last year with Darcy and I don't see it happening again.

Raynor is the standout and Brissie will take him... If not woohoo for us .. It's tougher after that but I think if Raynor is gone we have to take Fogarty . Originally I thought of Pav but now I'm thinking of a bigger Hodge .. Don't think we should take the chance on him being there at 5 ... Now I don't think LDU will be there at 5 so I'm thinking we take Brander(reminiscent of Cameron) or out of left field force brisbanes hand on Ballenden... Would not be adverse to taking Noughton with this pick either.... So ideally Raynor and Fogarty ...best outcome for the club.

Hayes isn't a forward in their mould, he's definitely a ruckman. I'd probably say a Josh Fraser type up forward at best. Looking into a few other more informed opinions of people who watch a lot of U18 footy and have followed him more closely, they seem to say similar things. He's had a quiet year and doesn't really have any standout characteristics. He's the best ruckman available this year but I certainly wouldn't waste a top 10 pick on him.

I also think the game has gone past two out and out ruckman unless at least one is very mobile and preferably both. Hayes isn't that guy and we certainly don't need to throw a top 5 pick at a ruck to find out.

Okay Biz. Agree on the two big ruckmen that's why I was hoping there might be someone we could pinch that would be a support to Darcy in the future, but more of a forward/ ruckman instead of a ruckman/forward like Darcy.

Where abouts do you think Miller will be picked up? Will there be any local kids left or anyone of value that might last from our 40s pick onwards and upwards?

We did get a steal with Ryan so I'm hopeful we could pick up another mature ager like him. Tim Kelly for instance although he is on the slime radar.

I think there will be plenty of locals left around our pick in the 40's but at that point in the draft players tend to have obvious flaws and are much more of a gamble. That's where our recruiters will earn their pay cheques.

I'm not a fan of going for the mature age talent at the point either and would prefer to work on a kid. I'm probably in the smaller camp who isn't a big fan of the mature West Aussies available in this draft but with so many picks being carried into the draft this year, I imagine we will be hitting a couple of them. A ruckman would almost have to be one so Scott Jones is likely to be one. We'll have to wait and see how that stage of the draft pans out.

If a player is of the type you need, he does not have to be the best player in the draft, to be worth a number 1 pick to you. We need a big forward/ruck backup.

Well, if this S.A. youngster has some forward potential I'd definitely go for him before local product Scott Jones. Jones is definitely a ruckman first and he's in the same mould as Darcy, which isn't what we really need.

OK, so one of the mids has to be hated by the umps and pinged for htb at least twice a game...
