Some more observations as my pulse rate returns to normal

- essentially gave up Weller and Crozier for 2017 pick 2 ... remove all the angst about Weller wanting out if GC had come knocking with that deal we would have looked real hard at it

- next year's draft (2018) we have sold the farm

What I like most about this year's trade period is the level of integrity and commitment displayed by our recruiting team.

We dealt with trade requests for Balic and Crozier professionally, respectfully and they both got to where they wanted to for fair compensation (based on how a number of other trades went down).

We also dealt professionally and respectfully with clubs we were targeting players from - in particular with GWS after the Cammac debacle - and again fair trades were finalised with the minimum of fuss (albeit at the death knock).

But mostly I like how we dealt with the shonky poaching of Weller. GC tried to back-door us and instead got bent over with a queue waiting. This sends a clear message to the other 17 clubs that if you try and pinch our blokes from under our noses - without sending a clear signal before trading starts that that's what you're about - then expect to pay 'overs' for them.

Others will say this is an isolated situation, but for mine is just continues to show the growing level of professionalism, competence and effectiveness of our club.

Bring on 2018!!

391, I have a different take as to why we gave away our future picks in 2018. Clearly the Freo management have targeted 2018 as the start of our finals campaign with the aim of ultimate success by 2020. There's no doubt we'll have to offload a player or 2 to get back into the draft but it matters not. The list is now on target for a premiership. Just maybe we might pick up a KPP with pick 2 or 5 but I hope not. A gun 190+ mid will do me or 2 of them. We'll have in the engine room a Dusty Martin type plus a Josh Kelly type to complement young Darcy. It doesn't get any better than that.

391: given that Weller made it clear that he was going, I'm not sure we can say that we "gave him up" for pick 2. We could have been left with a disinterested player and nothing at the end of 2018.

Not to get exited but last time had two single digit draft picks was 1999. That delivered Hase and Pav. An extention to that is all single digit picks since 1999
1999 - Hase (2), Pav (4) and Brown (5)
2007 - Palmer (7)
2008 - Hill (3)
2009 - Mora (5)
2016 - Logue (8)

Not many misses Mora injury aside.

Another good offseason by the team, but surely GC17 either entered into a contract with Weller against the AFL's rules (and thus couldn't back out of doing a trade) or both clubs acknowledged Freo would lose 5000 female members.

Either way, great outcome.

So, do we pick the best available players in the draft, or just ask Melbourne now who they want next year for Jesse Hogan?
