Weller is a proven first rounder on the rise who is apparently worth $800K a year. This puts him in the same class as Lever who was worth two first round picks. Adelaide played hard ball even though Lever was out of contract and Melbourne buckled without a whimper. GC is desperate to demonstrate that a young gun wants to go there and it's unbelievable that anyone would suggest anything less than a high first round pick plus a very good player. But I know who is likely to buckle.

Walba, you're giving little credit to the people that brought Bennell, Hill, Hamling and the younsters in Darcy, Cox, Ryan last year. I'm pretty sure Freo won't be blinking first in the Weller Trade. The demand of Pick 2, while many think is absurb, was a masterstoke. Like I said, GC needs Weller more than we do and the Wilson trade will happen because GWS will reconsider a future second rounder from us, given they're likely to expect Freo occupying the lower rungs of the ladder in 2018. I think GC either parts with their Pick 2 this year or their pick 21 and a player. Weller will be the face of the GC in 12-18 months and to them that's gold.

Why do you say GC needs Weller more than the Dockers ? Losing Weller and Balic leaves the mifdfield with a decidedly middle aged look and no obvious replacements apart from Blakely on the way.

Weller was not going to have much midfield time with Walters and Blakely going through there. The guy wasn't even in our top 10 in the Doig. Our mids include Fyfe, Neale, Hill, Mundy, Blakely, Walters, perhaps Bennell, then throw in the fringes with the likes of Suban and Sutcliffe. There's plenty of ammo there. I still think Freo's backup plan will be a player and their second round pick. But I'm no recruiting genius.

These days players decide where they want to live and play footy. I don’t think clubs can do much about the players wanting to go home whether we like it or not.
Cammac stayed out of the game for a year because he wanted to come home. It was unfortunate that Gws wouldn’t budge; I don’t think anyone really won: Cam got paid but couldn’t play footy and Gws lost a player from their squad.
If Freo don’t trade Weller to GCS what options does he have? Walk out on Freo? Play but be disgruntled? Have his girlfriend go and stay on the Gold Coast and he would then ask for leave as often as possible?
Freo needs to do the deal and be smart about it as Nathan Wilson is in a similar situation as Weller. Trick stuff but this is when Lloyd and co. earn their keep.

If he continues to lead his charmed life, I still believe Darcy Tucker can also develop into an above average midfielder.

Oh and I also must say it's a ridiculous position to hold to criticise Freo on player retention. The internet, for a thing that never forgets, seems to have a very short memory.
