The difference there is that, after a catastrophic start to a season, Hawthorn attempted to get back up again.

I think both clubs saw the fall coming. Hawthorn prepared for it and reacted when it happened. Fremantle decided to not do anything and lay down for a few seasons to get draft picks. It's either that or incompetence.

It will be interesting to see how Hawthorn go next year. They have obviously tried for a quick rebound and based on the second half of 2017 it seems to have worked, but I wouldn't be too sure just yet.

Memory hole. It's easy to sprout the words "top of the ladder" but the team looked pretty stuffed by the end of that year. We only just managed to hang on to top spot. We'd won a lot of games by small or tiny margins and had an unbelievably crap percentage for a top of the ladder team if I recall correctly.

We had a list with some bright spots but we tended to succeed by tenacity more than that silky skills.

You'd get a more realistic picture if you looked at year to year percentages and compared them with other minor premiers.

thats all good and well, but at the end of the 2017 Hawthorn, Sydney and Fremantle all ended up without a premiership. Who gives a toss where you finish at the end of the day every team, other than Richmond, had an unsuccessful year. Success is measured by Premierships, the road getting there is long and varied but what you did this year is no guarantee of what happens next year.
