While we have week by week voting on the MOTY/GOTY nominations, I thought the short list and final selections were done by a panel, rather than public vote. I don't think it has always been by public vote.
Despite Joe's being a great mark, I thought Howe's nomination was comparable, but his sustained repeats through the season (all of them would have been worthy nominations) made him worth the win.
I was equally surprised by Buddy not winning GOTY — perhaps people thought he really did run too far before his kick.

Yeah, the 201cm guy is expected to jump that high, and any of Howe's were more worthy...but personally I thought Grundy's was best for difficulty,l poise and balance combined with perfect timing.

I didn't realise that I was second to the ball there behind Dane Swan in the unsighted reference, apologies. One of few times I'm going to agree with Eddie though. I must admit I was expecting Daniher to be more embarrassed on stage, and for him to highlight that Howe's mark was clearly far better, but that never came. I hope he got a years supply of weetbix.

I don't mind the public voting on it because when a panel decided on it they started giving it to 'courageous' marks and technically difficult marks because people on panels become stupid.

I think you've got to run it through the Grand Final like they used to, though, so that the participation rate corrects for any campaigns the club might run to get their player up.

Having said that, who votes for someone to win mark of the year just because they're from their club? I want someone from my club to take mark of the year. I don't want to pretend they took it because I can click on their name a lot.
