Showing my ignorance now, but does that mean he is a restricted free agent? Meaning we don't have to find picks to give up.
Only concern then becomes contract value and length securing Gold Coast a pick they would be happy with. Mayne type deal would do this surely. Matera would be worth $500 000 over 4 years I would have thought.
Good job by club if they get him for that.

Gold Coast have no say it in really.
AFL determines their compensation...
Given hes a restricted free agent, Gold Coast can match our offer but what club would make somebody stay on a 3 year deal when they dont want to be there.
If we offer a $1M - $1.2M over 3 years which is just above average pay these days anyway GC would prob get a second rounder.
win win for all.
He will be a great get for us as it allows Micky to play more time on the middle. Matera could actually be a jet for us - 50-60 goals a year for the next five years

If he's delisted and thus free, picking him up in case there are injuries is fair enough. However he is not in our best 22 when rebuilding and we need to be developing a kid to take over a forward pocket position. We can't give up draft picks for another middle aged average player, we've got to actually use them.

As I said earlier, Matera is a fringe player at GC (finished the season in the two's) and is out of contract.

I'm not even aware of GC offering him another contract at this point in time - but I stand to be corrected.

Fail to see he's worth more than a third round pick under the circumstances - particularly as we would get him in the PSD with the fifth pick. He just states how much he wants (I.e. How much we're prepared to pay him - prob in the $500k/season as others have mentioned) and where he wants to play (I.e. Anywhere is fine so long as it's Perth).

Seeing how we did GC a solid last year by delisting Barlow so they could get him for nothing - they may return the favour by delisting Matera before the first List lodgement date (31/10/17?).
