If Richmond lost last night the AwFL would feel very comfortable in giving him 2 weeks, but like last years Bulldogs, they have the perfect story coming up. Sloane, Ellis, and Cotchin all hit an opposition player in the head with force. According to the laws of the game, they should front the MRP and probably should cop 1 or 2 weeks. I know that wont happen.

If the AwFL doesn't want to suspend players arising from incidents in preliminary finals, change the laws of the game before the start of next season. Don't make a big noise about the head being sacrosanct, and say anyone hitting an opponent in the head, intentional or accidental, with a bump or in any contest will have a case to answer, and then use the weasel words of the low force, etc to let off some but not others.

There have been plenty of players who missed GF's through suspension over the years, but I guess consistency doesn't matter now that big money has come into the equasion.

I haven't watched the game and have only seen the incident in isolation. When I watch the replay it looks to me that Cotchin shows very little regard for making front on contact to Shiels head in how he chooses to contest the footy.
Whether or not this is means for suspension or not I have given up trying to guess.
I struggle with decisions being based around sentiment or what we would like to see people miss big games for. Every game a young guy struggling for a spot on list plays is a big game and could be his last. If he would be suspended then so should everybody else.

It's not a win for anything. Nothing happened because there was no contravention of the rules.

" He got off as predicted just like Fyfe did."

Like Fyfe got off the head clash charge?, The kneeing charge?, Striking Lewis, Yeo,?

Ok Cotchin's will be a topic of debate, and if there is that much grey area, then let him play.

But someone explain to me how Ellis has "no case to answer"?

Can't have a clean living fair footballer like Ellis missing a grand final just because some thug "chin butted" his elbow now can we.

"Plays for Richmond. No case to answer".
Quid pro quo: Richmond have to play a GF wearing pansy yellow.

Just On The one Fyfe got off with a fine did he have 2 previous fines that year like Cotchin had? I don't think so.

Well, Shiels actually had the ball in his hands, and Cotchin was never going to get the ball ahead of him, no matter where his eyes were facing...he got him high, and he missed the final 3 quarters. Cotchin only needed a fine to get a week...and nothing? Absolute comedy... Ellis should buy as many lotto tickets as he can!

We can now expect some fairly tough decisions early next season, as the AFL seek to regain control. The Ellis style in particular will get 2 weeks. But I still think the Cotchin one was marginal...

He dropped his shoulder as he made contact. That's why he hit Shiels' head rather than his shoulder, even if he was looking at the ball. In any home and away game most players would have received at least two weeks.
